3 Gallon mosquito fish

First off the mosquito fish is special. It doesn't swim that well yet it is aggressive which is why I can't put it with my guppies(10g) since the last time I did 2 juvenile guppy died and 3 of the adults were badly nipped while the others also had some nip fins. It can't go in my 20 high with my female betta since the last time I tried I had to put the betta in a hospital tank since all her fins were nipped luckily it regrew. The current is also a bit strong in my 20 high for it. The 3 gallon isn't fully a 3 gallon but its been in there for 3 months now. It has an air stone and water pump to circulate the water. I have 3 pothos plants which helps keeps the water clear. I do a water change every week. I like the natural look of it and the pothos are doing really fine. The roots help absorb nitrate but it also provides hiding places and makes it feel more natural. I have pothos in all my tanks! Feel free to comment

Why not fill the tank to the top? It will give him more swimming room. No filter on the tank?

I only have an air stone and water pump however I do vacuum the tank every 2 days and adding water that was lost. The tank level was lower since it was night and I just vacuumed.

Adding a filter and cycling the tank is always recommended

If there is no lid it may be possible for the fish to jump out and die.

Interesting setup. I must say I generally recommend a lid on all aquaria, but in this instance, it would not seem appropriate. If the fish does jump, it's just a Gambusia (the name means worthless).

Filtration can be replaced by water changes, but water changes cannot be replaced by filtration. Personally, I don't think cycling is relevant in a single fish setup with plants and lots of water changes.

I've kept the fish for 3 years in many different tank setup and it never jumped. The fish also has some kind of problem so it doesn't swim as well.

Possibly not the best way to decide if a fish is a jumper!

These things are a pest around the ponds in my area BC farmers put them Hall the ponds to eat mosquitoes. I scoop em up and put them in my big irrigation tanks to eat the larvae. They r really tough fish! U don't really need filtration just water changes.

What you need to keep fish (as a responsible keeper who cares about the welfare of the animals) is no ammonia or nitrites and low nitrates. A filter is just a way of achieving this in aquaria.
