3 Cardinal Tetras died!

I had 6 but 3 died, will the other 3 be okay until I get more from the pet store. The pet store that sells them is almost an hour away & I don't want to go all that way just for 3 more cardinal tetras right now.

It should be fine for a while, just make sure that you quarantine all new fish that you get.

 

Do you know what killed the three?

I wouldn't get anything else until you know the cause of the issue anyways.

It was the filter, but I have blocked it now with plants so they can't get hurt and die again. Poor things.

 

Ah well that's an easy fix then, at least.

Tetras need to be kept in groups of 6+ for their health and happiness, but certainly won't hurt them to be a smaller group for now until you next get to the store.

I figured as much, but thought it worth mentioning anyway for any lurkers that might happen across this thread.

 

Filter intakes don't kill fish. Dying fish get pulled to the filter. Healthy ones don't get caught, unless they are longfinned mutations with serious swimming difficulties to begin with. So you don't know your reason, and by blocking your intake, you have slowed the usefulness of your filter.
You have mistaken the effect for the cause.
Chances are, you simply got shaky fish from the store. 90% of the fish that die in their first 3 weeks in your (cycled) tank would have died in the store. Ammonia from shipping, viruses, crowding - all affect fish in stores.

It's not a normal filter intake, the tank has a sump built into the back. The water gets sucked into these slits that are in the bottom right hand corner of the tank.

Since putting the plants in front of this, the flow has not slowed down. I had an ornament in front of this that I moved just yesterday (obviously I didn't realise that I needed to block this at this point because I had not had any issues) because I rearranged the tank, and then this happened.

Also, I have had these fish longer than 3 weeks.

 

Sorry for your loss. My cardinal tetras were down to 3 for a few weeks till I could go get more. I had to move and 3 didn't survive the move. Very sad day for me.

You can add a sponge to most canister filter intakes, I personally bought a huge chunk of intake foam and cut out my own intake filters.

 

Cardinal Tetra, so good they named it twice! That got my attention to the post. I think they should be fine until you can sort the shoal size.
