3.5 gallon shrimp colony

Dillan Murphy

I am starting a 3.5 gallon shrimp colony. How many shrimp should I start out with to get a decent amount of male to female?

I'd start with 2-3 males and 4-5 females, personally.

It's a small tank, so you're not going to have too many issues with males finding females - and while you could start with more, I like to start with smaller colonies in newer tanks and let it build naturally, so I don't accidentally overload a tank before food has a chance to grow.

Where can I buy cherry shrimp that I can choose the male to female ratio?

Look for a local breeder that can supply both, if not just buy ½ dozen there's a good chance you'll have both

I'd recommend 8 - 10, and if you pick them out in a store don't select just the largest and prettiest. That stands a good chance of resulting in all females.

Thanks for this question. I started a 3 gallon shrimp tank with only one female and 2 males and so far nothing. I feel like I might need a few more to get things going...
