29gal Shell Dweller Tank

I have tentative plans to go fish shopping on Thursday and will likely be buying Tanganyika shell dwellers if I can find them. I haven't set up the 29gal for them just yet as it is still housing fish that will be traded in/sold. Plus I don't even know if I will be able to find any of the shellies I've been wanting for months.

Basically, if I do manage to find me some shellies the plan is a go. I've got gravel at the moment but plan to buy some play sand, perhaps a nice piece of wood and a couple anubias to add. I still need a few things for them though. Where have other people found proper shells for their fish? What sort of setups do others have? Pictures are welcome and please note what species, how many, tank size, as well as the price you paid for your fish.

With play sand I warn you you will need to wash it, and then wash it again, and when you're done wash it 3 more times. It's REALLY dusty.

I prefer silica sand, which still needs to be rinsed but is much cleaner and softer. Shellies prefer lighter colored sand FYI and if you're doing plants you need to make sure you put some rocks around them as most breeds are diggers.

Good news, called the pet store and the plan to empty the 29gal of all inhabitants is a go. We'll see how much store credit I can get from the Africans and plants I trade in. Hopefully things will go well and I can find some shellies tomorrow.

Just remembered that I have spare pool filter sand, but perhaps not enough for the 29gal. Might grab another bag of a finer sand if I find something suitable and mix them. I did a deep clean in preparation yesterday so I can just scoop out the gravel w/o clouding up the tank too much.

I'll also see about grabbing a decent LED light for this tank as well, nothing too fancy though. Perhaps just some LED strips or a cheap out doors flood light.

So I’ve trade in 40ish fish plus a bag of crypts and receive 63$ in store credit Despite that store credit, I spent another 71$ on various fish and a few supplies. Then another 40ish at another pet store

This bag of 5 multis cost a good 75$, 15$ per fish! Ignore the OB peacock fry, they are temporary. Same for the decor, I am just tossing in more hiding places till I get more shells.

The sand was at a hardware store, paid under 4$ while the sand at the pet store was around 20-25 for a slightly smaller bag.

I plan to gather more shells but atm there’s 11 and they’ve just started inspecting them. They also went after food.

First you will need to click on "Aquarium Forum" on the upper left hand corner, then you need to click on "fresh water fish and inverts". From there click on either "plecos" which is under "catfish" then hit the little black box at the top that says "post new thread". Then just type of what you want to say/ask and provide as much info about the problem as you can.
