29 gallon tank, "larger" fish options?

I just setup my 29 gallon tank so it has awhile yet to cycle before I can add fish but I was wondering (from freshwater fish experts on this forum) what my options for somewhat "larger" fish would be. Some advice would be greatly appreciated.

P.S. I'm new to all of the fish names and lingo

Hrms.. there arnt really any LARGE fish that belong in a smaller tank. There is no way around that logic. The biggest thing id ever put in there would be maybe a 4-5" fish with very low territorial needs. soooooooooo yeah. not much. Probably the biggest fish would be a 5" BN pleco..

A tank like that is good for a few things, a breeder grow out tank.
A small community tank.

Youll see a lot of 29s including my own have 1-2 schools of fish, a school of bottom dwellers 1-3 center piece fish and maybe a pleco.

IDK, I would consider a pair of Krebensis. Beautiful fish...I always wanted some.

Steatocranus casuarius would be my choice almost 6 inch fish. They love fast moving water as they are from the Zaire river so current is needed. They have awesome personality and are a bit rare for home aquariums. Just look at this guy!

Oh yeah common names. African block head or African lion head cichlid.

Just a friendly reminder, you may wish to either take the picture down or provide a link, if it isn't yours.

Male convicts get to 5-6 inches and are usually said to be ok in a 29 gallon with a female partner.

Some varieties of sailfin molly get fairly large relative to a 29g

Honey gourami. Really depends on what you will have stocked with it.

I have been growing out a colony of Steatocranus tinantI (slender buffalo heads) for a couple of years now, and simply based on my experience with this closely related species, I'm going to have to respectfully disagree. Mine are approaching breeding size, and they can be quite snippy with each other even though I have them in a 40 breeder with a much larger footprint. There is no way I could keep these fish in a 29. Unless the casuarius have a completely different demeanor than their tinantI cousins, I don't think this is a good idea. Jmo.

For 'larger' fish for a 29, I would recommend pearl gouramis-- Trichogaster leeri. They are more peaceful, and smaller than, trichopterus (blue, gold, opaline), but you get the satisfaction of having a 'larger fish. IMO you can keep a pair plus some other compatible tankmates.

Do you keep more than a pair in a 40?
I was thinking a single pair for the 29, I know of several people that keep them. I'm buying some young ones soon.

Yes, I have 7 or 8 of them hoping for a pair. They aren't terribly easy to pair off from what I understand. I got the group of them at an auction a couple of years ago.

A 29 gallon is more than enough for a single pair.

They can be difficult to pair off and they mate for life. Very interesting personalities they will actually show signs of depression if something happens to it's mate or if it can't find a mate.
