29 Gallon: Taking the Plunge into Brackish

Hey guys,

Finally got my 29 gallon sorted out so I have it free to use

I'm looking to start it out as fresh, slowly work it up into brackish, and then slowly work it up into full marine (FOWLR). This will be done very slowly though.

Are there any recommendations on how to go about this? When do I get my live rock in the tank?

What fish can I have for the brackish period? What fish will sustain brackish and full marine?

Thanks guys

I recommend going straight to saltwater (FOWLR at minimum) and buy your equipment with the thought that you will soon be getting into corals. I'm biased though.

I know that it can be tricky doing what I want to, and there are many things that can go wrong (but isn't there always?), but is there no way it can be done on this relatively small tank? Would it be better suited to bigger?

I really would like to go into this, but if it is completely unachievable or slightly pointless then yeah I will go into salt. I've always wanted a salt tank, but brackish is just not common, which is why I want to do that first.

I did a similar thing with a Green Spotted Puffer fish. When its small it lives in freshwater, from about two to four inches in Brackish and from about four to six in full salt water.

Mine is still in Brackish water, he is tolerant of salt fluctuations in the water as long as it stays up. You can tell from his behavior if the salt is too high/low.

Unfortunately he has beat up and tortured every tank mate that we have tried to put with him.

With the exception of GSP's and Figure 8 Puffers and mollies there are a limited number of brackish fish (at least at my LFS) so unless you have a very specific thing in mind pick fresh water or salt water and stick with it.

If your heat is set on a transition than I will be happy to help.

That is the exact idea I was thinking along doernuth.

I have done a lot of research and gotten good advice from the Saltwater experts on this sight. I have decided to go Saltwater straight. 55 gallon and not a 29 aswell The 29 I will be using for a sump and fuge.

That is very far down the road though I still have my 110g to keep me very busy. Not to mention I need to save ;D

Thank you very much for the offer though I do still plan on doing a brackish tank somewhere along the line, so if I do it in the near future I will be sure to look you up
