29 gallon betta split

Hey everyone! So moving around some tanks and plan to be giving my two male bettas my 29. The tank will have a divider down the middle. My bettas are currently housed in a 5 and 10 gallon both with some fish with them (the 5 gallon has some ember tetras, the 10 had some glo lights and some others (admittedly the 10 is a bit overstocked) but water parameters are good and they aren’t aggressive). Very exited to upgrade them and I have a wonderful idea for stocking and decor. I have two bettas, a mostly white betta and a mostly black. Here is the stocking. I’m trying to do mostly white fish on one side and mostly black fish on the other:
Side 1:
- 1 white male betta
- 6 albino Cory cats
- 6 white skirt tetras
- snails
- 6 glo light tetras
- 1 golden wonder killifish (maybe, have two in the 10 and plan to separate them into a larger tank maybe 1 on each side or might just put them in my 40 gallon breeder)

Side two:
- 1 black bette
- 6 black skirt tetras
- 6 emerald green Cory cats
- 1 killifish (maybe)
- 6 black neon tetras

tank will be planted and water changes 50% weekly.

I plan to make side 1 have black sand with some decor, and side two will have white sand. That way the color will contrast and make the fish colors pop. Will update when I have it going. Does anyone have a good diy divider they like to use that will allow water to pass through but not fish and preferably not sand? Thanks

That sounds like very extremely heavy overstocking to me. You're talking about having a total of 40 fish plus snails in a 29 gallon tank. I think you need to reduce the total by at least a dozen if not more.

That sounds really cool but I would hesitate to put Skirts that are know for fin nipping in with Betta especially in a relatively tight space.

Yes when I was typing it out I was realizing how overstocked it seemed. I likely will remove the glo light and black neon tetra schools. Only issue is I already have the glo lights so I don't know where I will put them (I don't like to sell fish unless it is absolutely necessary). As for fin nipping both my bettas are short fin, not long fin.

I wouldn't recommend putting any of these fish into this kind of setup, besides the two betta divided.

The cories need space, and I don't recommend anything smaller than a 20 gallon for albinos, emerald green cories get quite large and need every inch of a 20 gallon long, they need a longer footprint to properly swim and scavenge. You also should not mix glofish tetras, they are extremely nippy and food-aggressive, definitely not a good mix with bettas, not to mention the temperature disagreements between the two species. White skirt tetras are the same thing as glofish, just in their natural form, and they possess the same behavioral traits as the others.

I personally would stick to either a betta on each side with maybe a smaller schooling fish species, like ember tetras or harlequin rasboras or just one big tank with a group of schooling fish and any other cories or inverts that you'd like.

maybe I could keep the one betta in a 5 and the other betta could solely have the 29 gallon and I could do the larger schools. I would probably end up making the few schools much larger. I would so something like this:
- 1 male betta
- 2 golden killifish
- 12 glo light tetras
- 12 albino Cory cats
- 6 white skirt tetras
- snails

I previously stated that the tetras ideally should not be kept with the betta, as they have temperature and behavioral disagreements, because the tetras are much more boisterous, especially during feeding time. I would only do six of each school anyways.

I'm not so sure if killifish are compatible with bettas. I wouldn't risk housing both killifish and bettas in the same tank.

That's still quite overstocked. 33 fish in a 29 gallon is far too many. I also have not had much luck keeping Tetras and Bettas together for the reasons stated by other users.

These golden wonder killifishare currently in the 10 gallon with the betta (part of the reason I’m trying to upgrade them). They have been there for nearly a year and have been fine so I think they will work well together in the 29.

Should I maybe get rid of the skirt tetras? I will just get rid of the skirt tetras. The glo lights are also in the 10 with the betta so they will be fine. Like I said the 10 is overstocked, hence why I wanted to upgrade. But the tetras have been fine with this betta and so have the golden wonders.

I will drop the skirt tetras though.
