29 G Community Tank Questions

Sorry if I’m not in the right forum. I have a few question concerning my betta (Note: he is a plakat, I don’t know if the changes any answers) and my 29 g community tank:
Would albino cories and neon tetras be ok with him?
Is a temp at 75 degrees ok?
He is regrowing his fins from fin rot, could I still add him or should I wait until he has completely recovered so I don’t add stress to him?
What food is best for both neon tetras and bettas or should I feed two different options?
Is the filter top fin silentstream 30 ok for him or is the flow to strong? (What could I do to reduce the flow at home if so - I don’t have access to tape or sponges) finally - is my stocking ok? 12 neon tetras and 6 albino cories with the betta
Thank y’all so much!

What size tank is your betta in right now? Neons need lower temperatures than bettas. I would up the temperature to around 78. Cories should be okay with him. There may be some other schooling fish that could work but it's not recommended.

My betta is in a 2.5 gallon tank after his 10 gallon collapsed. Ok, up the temp. What other fish could I do instead of neons? I really want a school.

I would just keep the betta in the 2.5 as long as he doesn't seem too super active for it. If you did that, you would have a lot more options for the 29g

My betta is really active. I was thinking about putting him in the 29 gallon until I can get a new 10 gallon set up and cycled. After he is in the 10 gallon I was planing on added a dwarf gourami. Is this a good plan? What schooling fish would work with the gourami?

If you don't need the filter for the 2.5 gallon, just transfer it to the 10 gallon when you get it, it will automatically be cycled for your betta. I'd leave him in the 2.5 unless it's going to be awhile before you can get a 10g.

A DG in the 29 gallon? You can do that, what kinds of fish do you like? You could do neons with the DG and some cories.

Ok sounds good. Thank you so much. I’ll hopefully be able to swing by and get a 10 gallon today or next week. I have one more question about the betta. I did 3 weeks worth of daily 25% water changes in the 10 gallon before it collapsed. Is he good to go back to x2 weekly water changes in the 2.5 gallon or do I need to continue daily water changes until his fins are completely grown back? Would the tank collapsing on him set back his recovery? I’m sorry for all the questions and thank you for all your help. I am about to go on vacation and trying to make sure he will be ok.

What do you mean by collapse? I'm not sure about regrowing his fins. Gypsy13 Fanatic luckdown may be able to help you with that

Ok The wall’s silicon literally broke down for some reason. It was old and cheaply made (top fin). I wasn’t in town and my niece added him to the 2.5 without acclimating him or cycling the tank just Before the walls fell down on him. He was super stressed out but now he’s back to his normal active self. I quickly added used filter media, prime, and an IAL when I came home.

When there's no betta in the 29 gallon Id keep the temperature around 73-74f.

I would say it depends on if the tank is cycled and how bad he is currently. If the fins are on the mends you can probably get away with doing it less frequently but if not I would still recommend daily. Or even every other day if everyday is too hard on you.

Personally once they're 1/3 to 1/2 regrown I relax on water changes and only pick it up again if there's another incident.

-edit- just saw your post.

If it didn't tear his fins I'd say to do a few daily water changes and see how he is. I'm assuming he ended up out of the water? That could of caused some damage but my fish typically recover from that within 2 or 3 days at most. I just do water changes for a few days and they bounce back with no issues

I'm confused by what you mean when you say the tank collapsed as well. Once you clarify I can help with how it might affect his recovery.
It's updated now. The silicon broke

Ok. I am sorry that I haven’t been very clear. So the thing (not sure what it’s called - silicon?) holding the tank sides together started breaking down. There were plastic chunks floating around, a thick film on the water surface, and the water was cloudy and filthy. Daily water changes and an hour later same thing as before. I wasn’t in town so family added him to a spare 2.5 g without acclimating him with brand new water. The 10 g tank walls were being held together by a thread, so we had to throw it out.
Edit: just saw I had already typed out the story

Ok thank you just to clarify - so a week of daily water changes then back to normal? Could I add the betta to the 29 gallon just for three days? When we go on vacation a neighbor is going to watch them and not experienced. I think it would be a lot easier for them with one tank.

Ahhh okay! Bettas are pretty forgiving if you accidentally don't acclimate them. If he's acting fine he's probably okay from that side of things. Though if you used the media from the tank that broke you should test the water to make sure you didn't lose the cycle. Cloudy water like that (in my experience) usually means your cycle crashed and you have a bacteria bloom. It could be fine but I'm a worry wart.

May I see a picture of him please?

Tank is now cycled
The edges of his fins look dark but they are a light turquoise

I don't see anything that would make me think twice a week water changes wouldn't be enough. Doesn't look much worse than what happens in my sorority on occasion and they do fine with that.

If you're only going to be gone for 3 days honestly I'd leave him in his current tank and just tell them not to touch him. He will be fine for 3 days. It's better than stressing him out unnecessarily with moving and risking them doing something wrong. So long as it's cycled and you do a nice big water change before you go (and when you get back if you wanna be safe) there shouldn't be any issues.

But I've heard too many horror stories about what people come home to after a vacation to really trust anyone not to do all those things (like over feed or mess with the filters and "clean" them in tap water)

I have found as long as they are not flashly and mid tank, bottom dwellers do the best. Although I have 2 females in my 40 BT with a bunch of platy's and one molly and done oto's. Everyone gets along.

You have an abundance of options for a 29 gallon if you don't put the betta in.

My two cents. Leave him in the 2.5 until you have a ten. Daily partial water changes of 25% until you leave for vacation. Stocking for the 29 is for someone else. I don’t like 29s. The upper middle lower are just not cohesive to my brain. Lol. Happy vacation. When you get the ten gallon up and running, post pics ok?
