2022 HMPK Betta Spawns (Silver and Blue Marble)

Demeter

Working on 6th generation of my HMPK betta line. If you want the whole lineage check out my other betta breeding threads.

First pairing are silvers, full siblings from a yellow dragon female and a blue marble male.

They spawned 4/12 in a 5gal and eggs should hatch later tonight. Dad is doing an okay job at keeping the eggs together but his nest is tiny.

During the spawning process the female would hide away from the male by flipping up on top of the leaves. She did this several times. Overall she got a little battered but she’ll be okay.

Next pair, full siblings from the same blue marble male and an unrelated koi female from a previous spawn. They were set up today in a 10gal, currently both are on opposite sides of a divider.

Hoping for more silvers and maybe some yellows from the silver pair, I expect to see some blue marbles pop up too.

For the blue marble pair, I’d love more of the parents’ colors. I’ve never had such spotted individuals, both are lovely in body shape too. The male has better fin form than the female though. I expect lots of blues from them that will marble out.

BETTASCAPESUK

That second male looks so lovely, like a blue dalmatian! It's going to be interesting to see what the spawn turns out to be

Demeter

Silver spawn is doing well, dad is terrible at bubble nesting but the fry are all at the surface like they should be. It’s a fairly small spawn, to be expected of a relatively small young female.

The blue marbles are flirting up a storm. The female was very interested so I put her on his side last night. He hadn’t really started a nest so I stole one from another male. This got him into gear right away. He’s trying to entice the female with a flaring show and a dash back under the nest where he does the vertical wiggle dance. The female, while interested, isn’t quite ready yet. I think the male needs to be a little more aggressive. While the silver male was a bit too mean, the spotted boy is being too nice. They may spawn later today, but it’s looking like tomorrow.

It’s always interesting to see how the males will do their courtship. The silver male was more of a chase and bite, the blue marble is a dancer all the way.

Edit: Blue marble pair is now spawning! I saw the male swallowing the eggs from the first several embraces so I stepped in an confiscated some 30-40 eggs and placed then with the silver male, who quickly collected and put them up with his wigglers.

Apparently once the marble male caught on to my thieving he started putting the eggs up in the nest. I stopped taking the eggs away, hopefully his parenting instincts have kicked in now. The female is very diligent in collecting missed eggs, she may have to pick up his slack.

Edit again:
Spawning is over, about half the brood is with the dad and half is with the silver male. I don’t think I will have much problem telling the spawns apart. Most the marbles should start out blue like their parents did. The silvers should have mostly light colored fry. Time will tell! Super excited to see how they turn out.

Huh, I never would have thought that: 1. You can steal another males bubble nest for a male who may not have made one, or 2. A male may take care of some other random eggs.

You learn something new everyday!

I stole a nest for the silver spawn too, just helps get things going faster. I try to make sure they spawn on my days off so I can keep an eye on them.

As for “surrogate” parenting in fish, I’ve done the same with OB peacock cichlids. If the surrogate already has fry/eggs of a similar age they readily accept other fry/eggs. I should see if BN plecos would do the same, getting 2 pairs to spawn at similar times would be difficult though.

e_watson09

Awesome! That's so exciting! Hopefully both boys do a great job and take care of their fry!

Demeter

Everyone is free swimming now. Silver male was removed from his tank. Blue marble male must of eaten most of his spawn. I saw 6 fry in his little nest last night, the nest is gone now and I moved 3 free swimmers in with the silver spawn. They are eating vinegar eels and BBS.

I’ll probably be giving the blue marble pair another go in another week or two, I want a good sample spawn so I can get a better look at the genes I’m working with.

Demeter

No photos as they are teeny, if you’ve seen one you’ve seen them all! They have probably tripled in size since hatching. The 5gal was filled the rest of the way and next week I plan to start doing small water changes.

Some more exciting news, I purchased some new genes. A new fin type that I’ve really been wanting to try, CTPK. I found a US seller with a small selection of CTPK and I chose the two I thought had the best form. I could not find matching colors that I liked but I’m more interested in the fin type so that’s okay. They should be shipped next week. I have half a mind to breed them with my current line but we’ll see. If any get crossed it would be the male to one of my female silvers.

I’ve been avoiding CT because I think their body shape is just ugly. Bug-eyed, bulging belly, thin/weak body and ragged fins. But a CTPK? Much more appealing to the eye IMO.

Very interested to see how their spawns turn out!!! :)

Is CTPK crowntail plakat or comb tail plakat?

I have been wanting to try and breed my bettas for a while now, it looks super challenging, and I have no idea how to raise the fry at this point. I have been doing tons of research. I already have and LFS that I have an awesome relationship with that buys my fry. Bettas seem to be a bit more of a challenge though.

The hardest part is the live foods and keeping up on water changes. Once you have cultures of live micro foods it’s pretty simple after that. Though if you’ve never actively raised tiny egg laying species I do not recommend starting with bettas!

Demeter

First water change, did about 30%. Despite trying to be careful, I wanted to remove the mulm and inevitably sucked up all these guys. They were fine. So far I’ve seen just a couple with questionable spines but it’s still a little too soon to tell.

Goodness, they're so tiny, you must have great eyesight to see which ones have deformed spines already! They are so cute! Nothing but big eyes, lol!

Demeter

I got the CTPK pair today and they adjusted really fast. Both, especially the female, were out and exploring right away. Both ate some thawed blood worms too.

The female has marbled a bit since the listing photos. Not too surprising but she is very plump and seems ready to breed. I have the pair on opposite sides of a divider in the spawning tank. They have been too busy exploring to really take much notice of each other.

I’ll be watching to see courting behavior and nesting before I put them together. Hopefully it won’t take more than a couple weeks.

Wow! Both are so beautiful! Especially the female, I love her!!!

Demeter

Things are progressing with the CTPK pair. Unfortunately I have to head to work and they just started spawning. I expect a nest full of eggs when I return.

Here’s one of the deformed fry, it has an obvious spinal problem. Luckily I think this is the only one.

Got home to a nest of eggs, as expected. The female is a bit beat up but eating fine. Dad has a good amount of eggs to take care of, hard to see but there are two bundles of eggs towards the center. He’s currently busy moving them all to the right bundle.

This boy is a great nester, didn’t have to swipe a nest from another male this time. We’ll see if he keep it up when the eggs hatch.

As a side note, the female was very aggressive when I first introduced them. She was full on fighting with him and nipped his analfin. I separated and re-introduced the next day.

bettasXD

Wow that’s a huge nest!!

Aren’t you scared that they’re I’ll kill each other while you are gone?

In this particular tank there is plenty of cover. It's a fully planted 10gal, she could hide among the plants, under leaf litter or in a rock cave. Yes he was chasing her off when I got home (some 8hrs later) but she was not gravely injured. I've never had them kill each other as I take precautions where I can. If I hadn't been called in early I probably would of been able to separate them right after they finished, but things happen!

Demeter

The male CTPK ate most his eggs, he had a very fat belly for a couple days. Thought he ate them all until I saw a few tails hanging down. I moved out the free swimmers tonight, there may have been 15 or so. Currently they are in a hang-on specimen container. I’ll be letting the pair spawn again once they are ready.

The other 2 spawns are doing great, they’ll need a bigger tank soon. Slowly introducing decapsulated brine shrimp eggs and krill meal. I’m seeing a couple little floaters that can’t swim down, I’ll be culling the bad ones soon.

Still doing daily 50%+ water changes. I have skipped a few days here and there, work gets in the way. Most fry have dorsal and analfins, the largest have tiny pelvic fins. There are only a small number of runts, this means the daily water changes are keeping them all growing around the same rate. The one kinked fry has disappeared, assumably dead. I’ve decided to hold off on culling till they are moved to a bigger tank.

Still working on getting them to eat dry foods, they’re getting there! I have a small group of black/blue shrimp and a trio of baby rabbit snails to help with cleanup. Also been offering live mosquito larva, they love them and it is very entertaining to watch them swallow a larva almost as long as they are.

Color wise, all are looking cellophane with the largest being the only one that is grey with a juvenile stripe. The larger cellophanes are showing some iridescence. Some are more of a light honey color rather than white.

The CTPK pair is back together for spawning. They are currently in the chasing phase. I did find 4 more little fry with dad, they were moved over to the breeder box with the others last night.

Demeter

Look at this self-satisfied jerk! He ate most the eggs again. I am thinking of doing the fostering thing again, but that means I need to get another pair to spawn.

The silver male was a good dad but I want to try another pair, one of these 2 male are good possibilities. I only have 2 nice silver females, the blue marble female and a “red dragon” that are good breeding quality. I need to do some thinking on that.

Also, thought I’d share my mix for the current betta fry. Krill meal, golden pearls, decapsulated brine shrimp eggs, 2 sizes of high protein fry food, and the red stuff is something for natural color enhancement. Most the fry are taking it well.

Round 2 of the CTPK spawn. Found 17 but likely missed some as I apparently missed 3 from the first spawn!

The two HMPK spawns are still in the 5gal, next weekend I should be getting a 10gal to move then into. Some fry are getting a bit or red in their analfins now.

Demeter

35 of the largest fry have been moved to a 10gal. 15 were culled, 2 of which were large but didn’t have good development of the swim bladder and struggled to swim. There’s one fry that has funky dorsal fin, like it only has 2-3 fin rays. I should cull but it seems healthy otherwise. Curious to see how it turns out.

The older CTPK spawn is starting to accept dry foods, they were moved to a breeder basket and placed in a 29gal. They are about the size of guppy fry now.

Demeter

After a long wait, the fry in the 5gal were moved to a new (used) 10gal yesterday! There were about 160 betta fry. A dozen guppy fry and a handful of rice fish and rainbow fry were also added in.

7537C224-7478-41DC-89A0-F28927164672.jpeg

It was previously a planted shrimp tank. Most the shrimp were sorted by color (brown and red) then moved either to the cull tank or to my own colony of reds. Most the plants stayed in the tank so it looks pretty full now.

I also moved 25 of the bigger CTPK into the 5gal. Some runts from the HMPK spawns are with them too.

Demeter

Moved some fry around, 10 big ones went into a 29gal, 55 medium ones are in one 10gal and the remaining 130 smaller ones are still in the newest 10gal.

Colors are starting to show nicely. The biggest one is looking like a male.

Here’s a weird one, is has a tiny dorsal fin, looks like a single ray which is hard to see right now.

DB02786B-AC1E-4F72-8151-988066CB3AF5.jpeg

I let the CTPK pair spawn for a third time. Once again, he left me just a handful of fry. I’m done with this pair. I have about 40-50 fry so that should be enough. The female is in the sorority tank now. She turned into more of a mustard gas as she aged.
