20 Gallon Newbie Build

Hello everyone! Firstly, an introduction: My name is Matt, and this is my first time post in what will hopefully be a long fishkeeping life

I have recently graduated, and in doing so, upgraded my 10 gallon to a 20 long. In it I currently have 3 Dalmation mollies (2 female, 1 male) and four Rosy Tetras. I feel like I am on the verge of overstock due to the mollies, but my (relatively trustworthy) LFS seems to think I can fit at least 4 or 5 small-breed Cory's. I'm not so sure, but it brings up the question: what can I actually expect out of my newfound space? Any advice or thoughts are appreciated, and I'm glad to finally be a part of the the community I have used so often in the past!

  • Edit: I am not quite a newbie, as I have kept a tank of at least 10 gallons for the last 3 years... Just relatively small ones!

Congrats on the upgrade and welcome! I’m not too informed about mollies but you can definitely put a school of cories in your tank. Like you said, go for the smaller species (Julii, panda, sterbai) and you could put a group of 6 in there just depends what temperature you keep your tank

Its a cute tank, I love my cory's and have 9 of them in a well established tank with mollies and others...main thing is add fish slowly, and watch your water parameters closely along with frequent water changes.

Thank you! The Amazon Swords are live, and the intent is to introduce more live plants as I become more aquainted and sure of my plant keeping abilities. The other few are providing cover until such a time comes!

sounds like a really good plan - I almost have as much fun with plants as I do fish. but it is always good to take it slow and introduce plants as you develop a bit more experience.

Dont forget to use a little aquatic plant fertalizer early on until your tank cycles properly - just keep an eye on tank algae (a couple of snails can help if it becomes a problem)

Thank you for the insight and encouragement! Glad to know that I am on the right track with plants!
