20 gallon long aquarium build

Hi all, I amin the process of building a 20long lightly planted. The question I have is on filtration. I was thinking about using an aquaclear 50. But in addition on the other side I was wanting to add a sponge filter. Not sure of size or type though and am looking for some input. I will have just mollies and guppies (or that's my plan for now). I am worried about water movement. Might not be a big deal though. Also I currently have a light from a 36 bowfront tank it a Coralife Coralife Aqualight T5 Dual Fluorescent Lamp Fixture. I have 2 6500k 18w bulbs in it. Would this be too much light? Or just take out one of the bulbs and call it good. Definitely don't want to battle algae. Thoughts?

A aquaclear 50 on a 20 long will create quite a current which might be what you want; but not sure the guppies will enjoy it. If you do use an aquaclear 50 put it on the side so the flow is across the long side. As to your question on sponge filter - a 2 or 3 inch wide one is fine. You could just use two sponge filters and call it a day. Just use a decent air pump to ensure good flow through the sponges. I use swisstropical cube sponge filters because they are small and efficient but there are many alternatives on the markets that will work adequately.

Thanks for the quick reply. I was going to use the aqua clear on the left and turn the flow down. I am curious about dead spots...but then again it might be fine with this setup.

I was wondering would it be better to go with 2 Aquaclear 20's or 30's instead? Just for water movement? I know this is a longer tank so wondering about flow. But i would think the aquaclear 50 with a sponge filter. Just looking for idea's.

Given that a sponge filter or two should provide adequate filtration; I think you should stop and consider whether your intended stocking prefer fast, moderate or slow flowing waters...

I am going to put guppies and Cory's in it. Do they require slow flow.....I will have plants in it as well
