20 Gallon Hex Tank - Should I Return It?

HI there!

I have a 20 gallon hex tank that I'm planning on cycling soon. My initial stocking list was 10 danios, 1 clown pleco, and one dwarf gourami with live plants. I've since read that the hex tanks aren't great for many fish. Would this stocking list not work in this type of tank? If not, would it work in a 20 gallon long tank? I'm reluctant to return the hex just because I'm terrified of dropping it on the way to the car, haha!! I'm little and it took me forever to get it to where it is now, but if a long would be a lot better, I'll make the journey again.

Thanks so much!

The holding capacity of a tank is determined by the surface area and the foot print of the tank. Hex tanks seem to be tall compared to most rectangular tanks, so they won't hold as many fish. You can have the danios and gourami, but not the clown loach. This applies to either tank. I use 20 longs for breeding tanks because of the large surface area and foot print ( it holds more fish). A 20 show is a much prettier tank because of the height, and will still hold a lot more fish than a 20 hex. If you like the foot print of a 20 long, a much nicer tank is a 29. and it doesn't cost a lot more to set up.

Thanks for the info! I might get a long. Also, I wasn't planning on a clown loach... A clown pleco, cuz they stay small. Would that be okay?

I must have read it wrong, a clown pleco would be good.

Yay!! So my stocking plan is fine!! I'm so excited - it's a gift for my boyfriend's 40th (well, and for me, hahaha...), and I think he'll be so excited.
