I decided to get a 20 gallon to start off with. I know everything about the nitrogen cycle and water parameters, but what fish can I put in it? My dimensions are 24" L x 12.5" W x 16.5" H.
I want to be sure they are as happy and healthy as possible.

    How about
15 Celestial Pearl Danios or 15 Chili Rasboras
    5 Scarlet badis(1 Male 4 Females) or 3 Honey Gourami(1 male 2 Female)
15 Pygmy Cories or 15 Peppered Cories

You should get Livebearers. You could watch generation of fish and watch the fry grow up.

    5 gallon
    Heterandria formosa – Least Killifish
    Neoheterandria elegans – Tiger Teddy
    poecilopsis-gracilus

    10 gallon
    Girardinus metallicus – Metallic Girardinus
    limia-nigrofasciata
    poecilia-wingei

    20 gallon
    xiphophorus-maculatus
    xiphophorus-variatus
    poecilia-reticulata
    micropoecilia-picta
    poecilia-sphenops

For future replies, here is what I'll be getting on amazon - Amazon.com : Marina LED Aquarium Kit, 20 gallon : Pet Supplies
I'll be getting the 20 gallon version, of course.

I like the idea of Celestial Pearl Danios, they are awesome. Thank you!

That does sound pretty neat, I'll look into it. Thanks!

The thing with CPDs is you will need a lot of places for them to hide(Live Plants, Rock Caves, Driftwood are some of the best natural hiding holes) as they are very shy without them and won't show natural behavior.

I was going to have those things as decoration anyway so they should be okay, but I'll do more research just to be sure.

Thanks for the help! I was considering zebra danios but with how active they are I don't feel comfortable putting them in a tank that isn't at least 30 inches long, so I'm happy to see an alternative.

Lol yeah they are pretty cool. One quick question if you don't mind answering, could I put a few cherry shrimp with 10 celestial pearl danios in the 20 gallon?
