Help! Thinking of getting a 40 gallon tank and I have 2 50 watt heaters I can put in there. Would that work? I heard 40 gal needs 100 watts so will it work? Thanks !

I can set them to a temp. They will turn off when it’s at the set temperature
Ok good. A lot of 50w heaters are preset to 78F (25.5 C) for smaller tanks and that's a bit too warm for goldfish. Just checking.

You will be fine with that.

Do you think 2 fantailed goldfish and 4 variatus platies will be good stocking in that tank?

Ok thanks.
How much would I need to clean the tank with a good filter? I know goldfish poop a lot so is it more cleaning?

I think a lot of goldfish people do about a 60-75% weekly water change. Maybe even multiples.

Stocking sounds OK to me, though I know very little about platies. That said with that stocking you could probably go without a heater. . . unless your home is super cold for some reason

I just like the heater just to make sure it doesn’t go to low. It does get pretty cold here and I think a stable temp is good for fish. And I already have them lol so might as well use them. Yeah these are variatus platies their different cause they can go in colder waters. I’m actually only going to get one goldfish and the platies. I just don’t want to overstock and do more water changes
