it could be a parasite called Ich! i'd recommend raising the temperature to around 84-86 degrees in order to speed up the life cycle of this parasite

I would try to determine what it is that they actually have first. It sounds like Ich but it could be something else. Many fish diseases cause white spots. Can you provide a picture?

Yes I would search for heat treatment for Ich. You simply turn your heat up slowly. About 1-2°F every couple hours until you reach 86°F. This will speed up the life cycle of the parasites. It can take a couple of weeks but it will keep you from having to add or buy and medicines which are really hard on the fish. Just search it here or online.

HI Lyonell, if you don't have live plants aquarium salt will help. It used to be that just salt would kill the ich parasite alone but these days either just the heat, just the malachite green or a combination of heat and salt will work. Unfortunately the parasite has changed enough over the past decade that often salt alone is not enough. If you want to try it, here are the instructions. It doesn't mean it won't work, but if it doesn't you'll need to get that heater. A dip won't work, it needs to go into your aquarium.

1. Add in 1 tsp aquarium salt per gallon- pre-dissolved into your tank.
2. 12 hours later repeat dosage
3. 12 hours later repeat once more. Now you have a total of .3% salt. This is enough to kill the ich parasite generally, other than what I mentioned above. The reason the heat is important as a combination treatment is that it speeds up the life cycle of the parasite. It doesn't mean it won't work at 78 but it will take longer to treat.
4. Every two days do a water change, gravel vacuum and re-add the salt you removed. So if you remove 5 gallon water, replace 3 tablespoons or 5 teaspoons aquarium salt.
5. After there are no signs of ich, then leave the salt in at this level for 2 weeks more.
6. Slowly increase your heat to 86°F...1-2°F every 2hr.
The majority of fish can tolerate this amount of salt, especially the way its ramped up. Truly scaleless fish will not be able to tolerate it though. What type of fish do you have?

I suggest not adding any salt with the heat treatment.
As others have stated, raise the temp slowly to 86°.
Keep the temp there for a FULL TWO WEEKS. During this time, you will have to syphon the substrate everday, or every other day to make sure that you pick up any cysts that fall off.
At the end of the two weeks, (I'd probably give it a couple of more days), do a water change.
The Ich will get worse before it gets better. Also, before the two weeks are up, the Ich will look completely gone, but don't go by this, make sure to go the full two weeks before dropping the temp.
