140 galllon(US)

I am building a 140 gallon freshwater fish tank...the dimension are 60"X18"X30"...please suggest the kind of filtration I will be needing...and should I get a UV-C filter or not...I laready have a 55 gallon fish tank...and I am using an candle filter...and UGF in it....it is doing a decent filtration...but needs frequent cleaning...in this new tank...I need very good filtration....my local shopkeeper is suggesting me to get an UV-C filter 30 watt....and is against canister filter....becasue according to his experience the canister filter is very difficult to maintain...as he said even a small hole of a pin size will drain all the water from the tank..well how much is this true...I have no idea....so need help and suggestion...to build this tank....and make it look good...thanks in advance for the sugeestion.......x

Welcome to the forum!

I love my canisters, and with a tank that big you should either get 2 canisters or do a sump. Canisters are very easy to maintain, and the threat of the filter draining the tank is miniscule at best. I actually had on of my HOBs draining the tank last week, so that's always a possibility, albeit a remote one.

Fluval, Ehiem, Rena and AquaClear all make good canister filters.

Get the Jebo canister. Make sure the GPH rating of the filter you buy is at least 5-10 times the tank capacity. So for your 140gal. use a 1000-1400GPH rated filter. You shouldn't need UGF if you have a canister... sounds like your shopkeeper is dodgy and trying to rip you off... UV filters aren't essential equipment. They do however provide a way of killing free floating bacteria and disease if specified and setup properly. Hope this helps

The spray bar on my canister filter is positioned just under the water level in my 55gal and it does fine. It creates a bit less of a current that way.

No filter will prevent algae growth.

You should do a partial water change every week, generally changing out 15-20% of the water in the tank for fresh.

thanks for the quick response...I understand that algae will eventually grow...but I need to minimize the rate of growth to minimum...will UV sterilizer help...?I am using a mineral water for my aquarium...thus its difficult for me to change water that frequently...thus any suggfestion will be highly valuable..!!!!
