13.5 Gallon Ideas

HI again,

I’ve posted before about my new 13.5 Fluval Sea tank that I’ve recently bought and was wondering some stocking options. Could I do a Ocellaris clown and a Fire fish in this tank? Or can someone recommend stocking ideas?

Thanks again

I think you could get away with the Ocellaris and the firefish, but I don't think I'd add any more fish after that, unless maybe it was a tiny goby or something.

Firefish may not be the best choice, too. They can be super skittish, and tend to dart around a bunch when startled, which can translate into them running into a bunch of stuff in a smaller tank. I think that they're fine as far as size goes in a 10, but I also think there's a lot of potential for injury for that particular species in a nano tank. The clown could also become a bit aggressive (or at least voracious during feeding time), so the firefish might struggle to get food, which would lead to overfeeding. It's a slippery slope!

If you really want the clownfish (and I'm assuming that that's non-negotiable), a shrimp/goby pair or a royal gramma might be a better choice than the firefish.

Agreed with above statements. I love shrimp goby pairs.

Thanks for the reply!

So a clown and a royal gramma would work better? Could I also put a shrimp in with those two fish or would that be over stocked? A snail a better choice? Sorry for all the questions.

Also, what would be a good species for a goby or Shrimp pair?

You could although the clownfish might be cramped long term in that tank.

Here are some options that are ideally suited to a tank of that size:

Firefish
Small Gobies (ie Clown Goby, Neon, Court Jester/Rainsford Goby)
Possum or Pink Streaked Wrasse
Small Blennies (ie Barnacle or Tailspot)

Thanks for your reply and the list of ideas!

Do you think a clown and a royal gramma would be ok too?

Clown Goby or a Clownfish? The Clownfish could work although maybe a bit cramped in the long run. As for the Royal Gramma I would say no. They generally need about a 30 inch long tank (ie 20 gallon long) minimum to have some room.

I meant Clownfish, and ok thanks! I was thinking about doing a single Clownfish and single Royal Gramma only in the tank but have to rethink.

The fish I mentioned in my earlier post would be the best fit for that tank.
