125gal Mbuna build- I have questions!

So I’m working on my craziest build so far, fish wise at least, and I apologize if this becomes a long post!!.
I am building a 125 Mbuna tank. the goal, is to only see fish and aqua scape and the outlets from canister filters.
To achieve this I am in the process of making a fibreglass 3d background once complete I will airbrush and seal with clear epoxy.
My canister filter intake will be built into the background and painted to match. Heaters are going to be inline using pvc piping with a 10” filter housing(s) to use for crushed coral, purogen etc for easy of access.
I looked at wave makers and decided I don’t want to see it in my tank. My solution is to use a 1300gph variable flow dc pump. I let will be on the same side as the canister filters and outlet on the opposite end about 1/3 up from the bottom. I plan to use this to create flow behind the background as well using a Venturi on the outlet with small hidden holes along the back ground.
Now here’s where I maybe a little crazy… my 3d background has a ‘bulge’ in the middle at the top where my pump and ato valve is going to be placed roughly 5gal worth BEHIND the back ground.
What are peoples thoughts on filling the void with something like bio ball or ‘scrubbies’ to essentially make a massive bio filter? Also I’m wondering about floating plants in the void, something like duckweed to try to help with the nasties, my thinking is it will be dead space anyway I may as well make it useful, any excess plants can be moved to the front as a tasty snack - I know plants generally don’t survive with cichlids.

with mauna you could try some anubias, the floaters would be cool to try. if it doesn't work then it doesn't, no shame no gain. what could work is if you did some pothos out of the top!

What canister are you looking at? I'm assuming something large like the FX6?

Unless you are doing this for the sport of creativity and building all of this stuff...i would consider running 2 FX6 filters....that would solve alot of your issues and give you extra flow and tank turnover.

or pond filters for me are way cheaper but do just as much, do 1 large one or 2-3 smaller pond filters!

You are correct I am going to be running an fx6. The way the back ground is designed I will be able to run a second one as well if need be- cost wise they are crazy expensive here. Especially if mail ordering.

honestly I am doing a lot of it for the fun of actually building and designing. Plus I get something that is 100% unique and not off the shelf.

I hadn’t thought about pond filters. They really are just supersized canister filters… now I have more research to do lol
