100W or 200W for 130 Litres

I need a new heater for my 130 Litre tank. I want the Juwel heater, as I use one in my 180 Litre and Juwel seems to have good reliability.

The issue being I believe I need a 150W, but the specific heater I want comes in 100W or 200W.

100W may not heat it enough in cold conditions, but will 200W heat it too much and burn my fish?

Which is the better option?

Thanks!

Hi devsi
A 200 watt heater will do your fish no harm .
A 300 watt will do your fish no harm. What will happen is it will turn on and off more than a smaller heater meaning it will not ( in theory ) last as long. A small heater of say 100 watts will be running most of the time meaning it will not last as long . In winter a small heater might struggle to heat the volume?

Having used a 200 watt heater temporarily in a 80 litre tank of mine I can say the fish will be fine.

Hey Flyfisha ! Thanks for the response!

Does that mean a 200W won’t last as long and a 100W won’t last as long (just for different reasons)?

Should I be looking for a 150W from a different brand instead?

Personally devsi, i would find a 150w heater that’s more suited to your tank size. Odd that juwel don’t do one in that wattage but you have plenty of options available. Aquael, fluval, eheim etc.

Oki doki :) thanks carsonsgjs ! And thanks for the other brand recommendations, I was struggling a bit for “good” brands as reviews are so mixed.

If the tank is in a room that gets cool (more than 5C cooler than the set temperature) get the 200W.

It definitely gets more than 5C cooler, especially in winter months! I have my heating set to 20c for mould control, which is already 6C cooler than the set temperature.

Thanks GlennO

A 150W will handle 6C cooler no problem, but if it's cooler than that for long periods I'd go with 200W.

The answer to your question in post #4 devsi is yes. Both a smaller than recommended heater and a very big heater will not last ,but for different reasons.
