10 Gallon Divided Betta Tank, Your Thoughts?

So, I am preparing to make my 10 gallon divided betta tank. This is the plan. Dirt, 1-2 inches, then river rock from walmart (you all know what I'm talking about) Plants:
Wisteria
Ludwigia
cardinal plant
Dwarf Sag
Java moss

I am planning on getting a female elephant ear, and maybe a male veil tail, or a plakat.

Your thoughts? Suggestions? Thanks!

Sounds good overall, except for the betta genders.

It’d be best to stick to one gender. If you don’t then the female is likely to have complications from smelling the male, but not being able to breed. She’ll hold her eggs waiting for the opportunity to breed, but because she can’t she’ll hold them for to long which can cause major issues in females.

I have not done a whole lot of research on both genders in a divided tank, but I have heard of some issues that you may want to look into further.

1. The male trying, and succeeding, in jumping over the divider to reach the female for breeding purposes.

2. The constant pheromones in the water causing the female's egg production to increase, causing her to become eggbound, which can be very dangerous and even lethal.

EDIT: Platylover beat me to it. Also, my comment double posted for some reason.

I don't recommend a male and female in a divided tank unless the dividers are solid to where no water can pass through them, otherwise they will possibly become eggbound like mentioned before.

OKAY! Thanks! I'll put my male that I have now, Bucky in on one side and a new male on the other, and maybe put a female in the 5.5 gallon

Males and females aren't recommended to be together because of the hormones, but that's just a theory. There hasn't been any research supporting this and the information about this is anecdotal. There have been harem tanks with no reported negative effects on the females (david1978 I think your opinion on this is important) and there are females that get eggbound without being in the same waters with a male or even in sight of one. Prevention is important so I still wouldn't risk it.
