just doing a re-scape on my 10 gallon betta tank. I hope to make it look like their natural environment.

here is what I am using.

cherry branches.
beech leaves.
stones.
anubias
tea for tannins.
and substrate is white sand.

I am completely aware the tank looks horrible right now lol. and thanks for reading!

okay so I was trying to clean the sand but can't get the gravel vac to work.... and I have always been able to use it just fine.

let me know if you have a way that might work....

I don't have experience with sand specifically, but the method I use for the gravel vac I learned from YouTube I think? Basically you put the bucker lower than the tank as usual, and fill up that end piece you use for the actual vacuuming. Then I lift that out of the tank for the water to start flowing down the tubing, and put it back in the tank before it completely runs out of water. The trick is the timing of when to put it back in--too soon and there's no suction, too late and you've got an air bubble. Hope that helps!

thanks! that is the way I do it to. but I guess it just doesn't want to work for me today....

it think I will try it one more time though cause the sand is really dirty.

It's definitely the best method in my opinion! I hope you can get it to work, that really is annoying.

thanks! following your advice I got it to work perfectly! and now I am just cleaning the rocks and baking the beech leaves.

(sorry the post merged)

okay here are the current tank pictures. it was so dirty.... I think I will do one more gravel vac clean the glass real good then start putting in the rocks, plants and wood, wait a bit for it to clear before adding the tannins. but hopefully I will have Peeta (the betta) in by tonight cause he really doesn't like his temporary jar lol.

so I am almost done! I put everything in but need to wait for it to clear up to properly see how everything looks. also I will go in with a pipet to clean up the smaller bits of debris.

sorry the pictures are such horrible quality makes it look really bad lol.

Yay! so glad it worked out. Sometimes new aquariums can be a bit dusty when you first set them up but it should definitely clear up! Did you rinse the sand beforehand? I've heard sand in particular likes to be rinsed.

The bettas are always so confused in their temporary containers lol. Had to put mine in an opaque bucket the other day while I added some plants and he was just looking around like "hey!! why is it so shallow in here?!" Peeta is a great name, is that from the hunger games?

yeah I had rinsed the sand before just a bit cloudy since it was like a 75% water change and there was a lot of dirt lol.

and yes he is named from hunger games!

tomorrow I will put up the picture of the finished tank once it is perfectly clear.
