10 g “Kitchen Island” betta build

Umm, yes, my betta tank is going on my sturdy, solid pine kitchen island. Do I have an amazing hubby or what? He didn’t even raise an eyebrow when I announced I was setting up a tank on the island. I mean, I already have the 75 g in the kitchen so what’s one more!
I fell in love with philam’s amazing betta spawn and picked out a lovely boy who will be arriving the week after next.
I was originally going to use my quarantine tank but I had one tiger barb experience a mild case of ich so I decided to just get a new 10 g. I have both a 10 and 20 g course sponge filter from aquarium co op in my tanks so I’ll just transfer one when he arrives.
And after having to return tne first purchased tank to petco because I missed a tiny crack, I finally got started today.
I’m trying to use a lot of what I’ve accumulated so the gravel came with my free 29 g that got me started back into fish keeping 3 years ago.
And I had PFS from the 40 b I set up last November.
I have a few buckets full of wood and rocks that I’ve been collecting so I picked out a few.
So here’s the start. The wood will be attached to slate; just haven’t decided if I’m going to glue or silicone it. And I’ll probably add a few more smooth rocks to the left side and group the rocks closer to the sand to make room for a terra cotta pot as a cave.
I’ll trim some of the taller java fern from the 75 g for a background plant in one corner. I have Italian val, crypt costrata, crypt wendti red, and dwarf sag ordered.

And the plants you see are my house plants that live on the end of the island.

So the kitchen island became the kitchen counter tank lol! I couldn’t get everything plugged in to the surge strip so I just moved the tank.
I have more plants to add but here’s the tank this morning.

Eddie Betta arrived this afternoon and after a brief temp acclimation, I added him to the tank. He immediately went to work exploring and learning his new home. A few hours later, he had a light dinner of a couple pieces of frozen bloodworms and one NLS betta pellet. I’m quite smitten!

Got some vals from StarGirl yesterday and added some to the tank. I think I’ll leave it open a bit so Eddie has some swimming room.
Although I might glue a hunk of java fern on top of the terra cotta pot to balance out the tank a bit.
And yes, the tank is doing a bit of a mini cycle. NitrItes were at least 0.5 but not quite 1.0 today. Ammonia was 0.5. So I did a 50% WC and will just keep an eye on things. I figured that would happen as I only had the sponge filter in the 75 g for 2 weeks.

Eddie Betta is one handsome boy, and I like what you did with the substrate.

Picture of the tank today and a few of Eddie. Plants are all doing well. Love him to pieces but it’s a bit confusing when hubby asks “how’s Eddie?” And I ask the betta or horse? Yes, I have a horse named Ed.
