1.5g To 5g

HI everyone,

So I inspired my sister to buy a betta fish before I left for college in January, but as I began using this forum, I found out that the 1.5g she bought was probably unsuitable for any fish. So I am finally home and willing to help her out now.

Turns out, her friend has an unused 5.5g tank, which I just cleaned, put gravel in and some water. The current tank (1.5g) has a heater, filter, and light.

How could I transfer the betta from its current tank to the 5.5g tank? I am planning on buying plants and driftwood tomorrow. I understand how cycling works, but if I am using the same filter and dumping the betta's current water into the 5.5g tank, do I have to wait additional time?

You should be fine if you're using the same filter media! You shouldn't need to dump the old water in the new tank, the beneficial bacteria really isn't free floating in the water anyways

I would just move everything over. Fish, filter and water (its what the fish is used to) then slowly top off the tank. Like about a gallon an hour till its full to acclimate it.

 

I agree- move it all over, including the filter (and do not clean the filter right now). Make sure you have matched the temperature in the water you're adding the Betta to so he doesn't go into shock. After that, you should still keep a close eye on water parameters for a bit, just to be safe, but you should be good to go.
