Here is one of only three offspring I got out of a spawning between a Petco "King" male and a female from my Platinum Green HM line. He's the biggest Betta in the fishroom by far.

Ooh... I like. I don't normally like bettas but that one is stunning! The betta in your avatar is also quite pretty.

He's in the spawning tank with the sibling female now. So far he's not being very aggressive. The father was very passive and gentle. I'm hoping they'll spawn soon so I can have some of their offspring for the spring shows.

I demand baby pics when they spawn!

I find Kings to be pretty laid back. Dunno if I've just been lucky and seen the people who got the lucky ones, or what lol

I finally got him to spawn with a Gold HM female with Orange fins the 20th of this month but he ate the eggs. This evening I came home to see them spawing again so I grabbed my turkey baster and sucked up about 40 or 50 eggs and have them in a container with methylene blue in the water. Please oh please oh please let me have some fry out of this!!!! 48 hours seems like a long time to wait and see if they hatch. I had wanted to have some fry going on a couple months old by now for the shows starting in March but IF I get any I guess I can show them in May or June.

So wait, the cross was a half giant(king) and a regular? He is a pretty little boy, how big is he? Half giants normally fall over 3" body wise and under 5. Giants are 5-7" if not a little more.

Does anyone know the inheritance mechanism of betta size? If you cross a giant and a regular and get a King, it sounds like incomplete dominance. For example, if betta size is coded by the allele "B," then

BB x bb -> Bb (Giant x regular -> 100% Kings)

If that's correct, then crossing a King and a regular would be

Bb x bb -> 50% Bb, 50% bb

Or half Kings, half regulars.

I spawned a Petco "King" HMPK to a regular sized Pastel Green HM female. I only got three fry due to a velvet outbreak from too many people leaving the door open!!! All three are HalfGiant size. 3 to 4 inch from mouth to caudal peduncle. Add another inch to an inch and a half for their caudal fin. I couldn't get the one female to spawn with either of the sibling males so I spawned the best male to a Gold Orange female with HM and HMPK back ground so I should get both Halfmoons and Halfmoon Plakats. Whether any are larger than normal....we'll see. The eggs hatched and so far most of them are strong and staying in the nest or at the top of the cup for the ones I put in there. I don't see any laying at the bottom so that's a good sign. I always have an infusoria culture on hand and buy the 435 gram can of bbs eggs. 3 months from now I'll pretty much know how big they'll be. Hopefully I can breed one back to one of the big males. I tried to take a picture of the father flaring today but he's just too lazy.

Sortof but not exactly. If you take a Giant to a regular you will get a portion of regulars, a few half giants and maybe a Giant here an there. If you take a half to a full you can get a large number of giants, halfs and a few regulars. If you take a Giant to a Giant you get a small amount of normals, a few half giants, some giants for sure and then possibly some giants that are bigger then the parents. It is sort of a progressive gene.

I hop you don't mind me asking, but what is with the extreme feathering? Or do their fins just need to grow out

The ratio is supposed to be Giant X Regular = 1/3 Giant, 1/3 HalfGiant and 1/3 Regular. HalfGiant X HalfGiant = 1/4 Giant, 1/2 HalfGiant and 1/4 Regular. Something to that effect anyway. In theory that is. Reading a story from the two men in Thailand who claim to have developed Giants they only get a few Giants from every spawn. So like every other punnett square it only works on paper.

I have read that article too. I do not think that Petco Kings are the same line tbh. I mean, it isn't THAT hard to breed out a larger line of bettas using the resources/space the big thaI breeders have. May take a good number of generations but I doubt that they were the first to think of it. Particularly since most fighters would see the value in this.

Either way giant genes, regardless of where they are coming from seem to be something interesting to add to any line and why not? So far there haven,t been any risks in using or breeding them that I know of. Keep us updated on the line though for sure, if not for the colors alone.

12 days after spawning I have about 25 fry swimming around their 10 gallon. Not a big spawn but more than enough to work with. I'm going to put his siblings together again and see if I can get them to spawn. His brother is way more aggressive so I'll have to keep an eye on things.

He's stunning. Thanks for posting the pic. Out of curiousity, as a result of the interbreed have you noticed any behavioral changes or improvements? I know male bettas are agggressive but so beautiful. I would love to add one to my 50 but I fear he would eat my community fish. Thanks, Melissa

*P.s. I would love to buy one if you're looking to sell....I've got a nice 10 gal just for him I've purchased beautiful guppies from you so I know this betta would be a catch. Good job!!

It will be 4 months or more before they are grown out enough to be able to tell if they are keepable or (sellable) so when that time comes I'll mention B/S/T in the proper thread. It's flattering and exciting too that you all would want them. This is a big step for me since it's taken so much time to get some viable fry from this big lazy monster. I can't tell you how frustrating it is to try and do everything in your power and knowledge to continue a line sometimes. I only have one fry each from two spawns from a son of my avatar. The fry I lost moving back here was supposed to be my big show points winners in the up coming IBC show season. Now I can't get a decent spawn out of that line. This is the male I want fry from. I think you can understand my frustration.

See, this is why I got a C on last year's genetics unit test. I could never keep track of all this!

Just playful banter for now . If any of us were terribly serious we would probably PM Chard56.

Just being a reminderer. Very nice fish Btw. I have heard a few testimony of giants and half giants having breeding issues for one reason or another.

My Purple line was started with a King Betta and a Chocolate regular female Betta. They were not a problem and he seemed to be very gentle. The Chocolate female was rougher. The one King female I found accidently sent as a male (at that time I couldn't order one) after searching for a year and a half was very aggressive and bit a hole in the side of the biggest King male. I could see his silver stomach lining and it took weeks for him to heal. It left a hole too. I eventually got them to spawn or try to spawn. They spent a day and a half not getting it right. He would get her halfway over and she would turn the other way or pop out the side. I finally had to separate them because I couldn't stand watching anymore. The Halfmoon male this thread is about is just lazy. Overly gentle almost and just acts like it's too much to ask to pick the eggs up and when he does it's too much hassle to put them in the dinky nest he made and eats most of them. Adding to it that a lot of females will go right at it when it comes to eating the eggs so out of a couple hundred eggs I was lucky to have saved two dozen AND to have them hatch. I'm trying to make room for the brother and sister of this guy. He's way more aggressive and she's not submissive. Oh boy, here we go!

Interesting. Fortunately I never experienced anything like that. My bettas were some of the easiest fish to breed ever. How are you conditioning the fish?

wow, that's some aggressive behaviors you've seen. Sorry to hear that.....must make the whole process increasingly frustrating. So glad to hear your fishie healed. This is all so fascinating....many thanks for sharing your pics and progress. You really have done some great work, the fish is truly stunning. Many wishes for a show stopper

That incident was 5 years ago and I haven't had anything like it since. I do have an occassional female chew up a Halfmoon males finnage to the point that he looks like a bad Crowntail before getting down to business but most of the time it's either they spawn nicely within 2 or 3 days of putting them together or they don't and I try a different pair or partner. I used to condition by feeding them frozen brine shrimp and frozen bloodworms once a day and pellets the other feeding. I'm mildly alergic to mosquitoes and bloodworms give me the same reaction so I quit feeding that. Now I just feed them pellets like the rest of my adults and don't find a need to feed anything special. I've had well over 200 successfull spawns and have 1,500 to over 2,000 Bettas on hand at any given time so I know the pellet feeding works fine.
