Loosing fish but water tests fine

I have to reinforce what others are saying. Never remove more than half of your filter media. That is where the bulk of the beneficial bacteria colony resides. You are throwing out what processes ammonia and nitrites. If your filter only has one cartridge slot, when you cannot wash in tank...

What kind of algae is this??

Yeah, but he is from my brother-in-law that passed away about 8 years ago. I don’t know how old he was then so he is probably about 10 years old. I will deal with him until he ages out. He is a pretty one though so that helps. I just cannot have any other fish similar to him or any catfish...

    Ammonia levels high

Ok, I am not seeing the picture and not sure what filter you are referring to. You want something with lots of filter media like sponges and ceramic rings as well as room for you to add more. You also want one that has a gph (gallons per hour) rating 10x your filter size. If 30g, you want...

What kind of algae is this??

I will add that I have been able to control it with a lot of work in pulling wood and pieces I could remove, cleaning off any algae I could and spraying with peroxide and letting sit while doing water change. Careful to not spray any plants attached until ready to put back in tank. Cover them...

    Ammonia levels high

There is no filter indicated. That is a big part of your problem. If you replaced the filter and did not keep the old filter running or move the old media over, you through out your beneficial bacteria colony.

What kind of algae is this??

Black beard algae. The worst of the worst. Some fish eat it, but have to be hungry. If well fed, they just graze. I have found adding a uv light to help. My next step is trying CO2.

    Ammonia levels high

Ok, lots to unpack here. I am glad you got a good test kit through this process. I will post in a link to learn about the nitrogen cycle. There are some great posts on this site as well. You may not have a large enough filter or enough filter media to properly build a beneficial bacteria...

55 Gallon Tank Jmaldo's African Cichlid Build

Bad fish! Brings back memories of when I had an Mbuna tank. I would lift that intake basket up a few inches. Sucking up sand will kill the filter.

    CO2 system

In case anyone is interested, after posting and getting positive responses in a couple hobby facebook groups, I decided to order the reactor from nilocg with added accessories for tying into an fx4 and replace the tubing with new black CO2 tubing. Hopefully, that will be all I need. Except...

Tips on hooking up an 18w coralife UV sterilizer to a canister filter?

Got it set up. Realized quickly that ribbed hose cannot be cut and put back together with connectors. I just used one of my Fluval fx4 drain hoses.

Tips on hooking up an 18w coralife UV sterilizer to a canister filter?

Good point. 18w sterilizer should have a max flow rate of 300gph. I am thinking the Fluval 306 is the way to go to get the best use out of the UV system. Straight into the outflow hose to minimize connections.

Tips on hooking up an 18w coralife UV sterilizer to a canister filter?

Any tips on hooking up an 18w coralife UV sterilizer to a canister filter? I was thinking on my fx4, but at max 700gph, research indicates that would be useless. I have a fluval 307 that is rated at 303gph that seems to be the best candidate, but that was just a stand in until hydor impellers...
