Confused if my betta is old or sick/constipated

Wouldn't hurt to try? If it seems to make him struggle, definitely turn it back down right away. Clean water, proper filtration and good flow should all be helpful, so let's see how things go. :)

Confused if my betta is old or sick/constipated

Is the flow too strong for him when it's on high?

Confused if my betta is old or sick/constipated

How's the water flow in the tank? Is the filter flow adjustable at all? Bettas generally like a more gentle flow, but there should be some surface agitation. Do you have an airstone in the tank?

Confused if my betta is old or sick/constipated

Daphnia generally has a 'laxative' like effect, so it's a good choice if you think he might be constipated. Best to use frozen, not freeze-dried though. :)

Confused if my betta is old or sick/constipated

Definitely do a water change now, and swish the filter cartridge around in the old water. Since you haven't touched the filter in 4 to 6 months, be prepared for the water in the bucket to look super gross :) then go pour it on some plants to make them happy. It might also be a good time to...

Confused if my betta is old or sick/constipated

NO it's GOOD that you haven't been changing the current cartridge!! The beneficial bacteria that keeps your cycle going lives in that filter cartridge. Don't change it, if it gets dirty, just rinse it out in old tank water after a water change. I asked because many people that are new to...

How much do YOU spend on a 5-10 gallon aquarium?!

My 10 gallon 'kit' was 50% off when I bought it... comes with filter & heater etc. Reg price $70, got it for $35 at Petsmart :)

Can you please tell us about your maintenance schedule - specifically for the filter. Does the filter have cartridges, and do you change them out?

Question Caring for fish during power outages

Funny, I literally just bought 2 battery powered air pumps (Pawfly brand) about an hour ago on Amazon in case of power outages! :) Winter is coming soon, and although it's unusual to have long lasting power outages where I live, it can and does happen from time to time. I did some reading on...

    Second Opinion On Color

Ah... sorry I thought you meant there were 0 nitrates in the tank! Oops! Your tank setup is gorgeous, by the way :)

    Second Opinion On Color

Your Nitrates are at 0? How big of a water change did you last do? Don't be so hard on yourself - you didn't mess up! This is a process to work thru :)

    Second Opinion On Color

You might also find that your nitrates will bump up too, as more ammonia is being processed. So keep an eye on those too! :) When are you planning to add fish?
  13. Algonquin

    Second Opinion On Color

Nope, your cycle is fine. You just added more ammonia than you have been, so it's going to take your cycle a bit of time to 'catch up' to the new amount. You've got enough bacteria in your filter to handle the 3ppm ammonia that you've been dosing, not 4ppm. Once it catches up, continue on...

    Betta fish with clamped fins.

Thanks for all the answers. I didn't mean for all the questions to sound like an interrogation :) The more info we have, the better we can help! :) Tankmates for bettas is a tricky topic. Whether or not it will work, and for how long, varies quite a bit. Generally speaking, bettas are better...

Also forgot to ask why you are dosing salt??

    Betta fish with clamped fins.

So just to be clear... he wasnt/isn't sick? If he's showing signs of stress (clamped fins), it's quite likely a result of the filter not running for 3 days, but also from being kept with unsuitable tankmates. Is the tank divided in any way to separate him from the guppies? Can u post a pic...

    Help Constipated betta?

Dried foods can be constipating. Do you soak the dry worms first in tank water? A varied diet is always a good idea! Can you try some frozen daphnia (good for constipation) and some frozen brine shrimp? You can get those at most fish stores, and they're not too expensive. The Betta Bits you...

    Betta fish with clamped fins.

Hi, what is your current water change schedule, and how much salt did you dose? Why was he in the hospital tank? If you could post the current tank parameters that would be great! What temp is his tank set at? Sounds like the poor guy is having a rough week :(

    Best Aquarium Test Kits?

I like the Seachem Nitrite/Nitrate test kit... simple to do, and uses minimal water & test chemicals. One drop of solution for the Nitrite test, and when it's complete, one tiny scoop of powder that you stir in for the Nitrate test. No crazy bottle shaking like API! Results are fairly easy to...
