    Alternative Amplexus Positions

It's not right to call it not right because it is right at least for some frogs. Those acts are beneficial to some participants. Having multiple males releasing in the water means some eggs will have different fathers a potential benefit to the female, and the second male who would have no...

How far would you travel for fish?

All this talk of traveling for fish reminded me long ago I drove 2500km each way into arid Australia to collect triops eggs. Alejandro knows where I keep the samples and has asked me many times to hatch some. Today we got one box out and set it up to see if they will still hatch - the date of...

    Alternative Amplexus Positions

It's quite common for two or more males to mate with one female frog.... another way they are the opposite of humans.

Whats the prettiest/best looking fish you've ever kept?

Alejandro's favourites are polypterus, butterfly fish, knife fish, lungfish, arowana, all weird shaped catfish, eels and other oddballs. The more unusual and primitive the better as long as it doesn't look like a "normal" fish and isn't colourful.

What do you look for when buying fish?

The best laid plans .......ah I agree with all above. But you try getting Alejadro out of a store once he finds a fish he wants. That said he is very picky and won't get anything that's not healthy and active - and we only go to the best stores and even then he's often telling the staff things...

    Do Fish Sleep?

If we ask human questions of animals it makes little sense. What is sleep? Do you need to have your eyes closed? Do you need to dream? Clearly fish don't sleep by our definition any more than they do math by our definition - but in reality they do both. They do both however without even knowing...

Have you ever moved a tank with fish still in it?

If it helps convince the Mrs, you can dig a hole and lower it into the ground then bury it - just have a small door and stairs like a bunker. It will also save costs because the ground adds insulation. They also stack like lego - so once you have one you can easily get a second without taking...

Have you ever moved a tank with fish still in it?

You dont need to sell it but you could buy one - from us. Here's one we made for someone else. The duct tape holds foam and cardboard wedged into gaps to stop glass sliding against metal and also absorbs some vibration - yes holds the tank together if a panel breaks - but we only ever lost one...

Have you ever moved a tank with fish still in it?

Not fish exactly but plenty of tanks full of water, rocks and plants - it's easy you just use a crane to lift the shipping container all the tanks are in onto a truck drive to the new location and get a crane to unload it. ...oh remember to bolt the shelving through the walls and duct tape glass...

What are you doing to your tank today?

Alejandro is feeding crickets (special treat) to his temperate reef tank. Also gave them to his mudskippers, axolotl, scorpions, lizards and frogs - but they usually get them.

    Photo Contest Suggestions

My suggestions to solve jlaquatics concerns were effectively self policing without software changes. So they might also evade the issues mimo91088 raised. All that would be needed is another line or two in the rules - depending on which ones you want to do. E.g. "entries open until 15th of...

What are you doing to your tank today?

Alejandro is doing his water tests today

    Photo Contest Suggestions

If the persons responsible wanted to or thought it would be helpful they could implement rules like no voting until a set date eg 15th of month on an honor system - since votes are visible people would be reminded by others if they vote early. This would solve the early pic wins problem listed...

    Do you name your fish?

Alejandro won't name any fish he just uses the names they came with - like "sea sweep" , "stargaazer" , "cowfish" etc... He's planning to make an exception when he discovers a new fish species - then he'll give it a name. He always talks about names and how he would look at all the parts and...

Chytrid? Idk what this is and im worried

Ok that's great if they are behaving well. Maybe you will never know why you had the problem - if it doesn't return it's not really an issue that you didn't find the cause. Good luck - glad they are calling and appear well.

Chytrid? Idk what this is and im worried

I think the important thing is to be looking out for anything that might be causing an issue - problems with tap water, use of chemicals in the house, materials used that may be toxic - we are likely looking for some stress that lowers their immune system . Leave lights off or low - maybe even...

When you build your house around your aquariums.

I realised I'd gone to far today when Alejandro's aquarium pipes got in the way of building a new room for his 2 month old baby brother Triton. Any sensible person might have moved the pipes but that was too hard as they come through the walls from tanks to filters and back again. So I...

Chytrid? Idk what this is and im worried

Yes - sick frogs (or any animals) rarely die from one thing. Usually they have a problem and lots of otherwise harmless microbes that would normally be fought off by the immune system jump on board. That just makes the job harder for the frog. I've only ever seen one fruiting fungi like that...

Chytrid? Idk what this is and im worried

How many frogs are left - do any have any unusual symptoms or behaviour? Do you have capacity to isolate and treat them - are they by themselves?

Do you keep fish that you never or rarely see?

Oh and we have some fish that never see us - Alejandro has 4 blind cave fish - perhaps that's why we can always see them!
