Funny Power is out--genius way I'm running my air pumps

These pumps are not great quality nor very strong. But they seem adequate.

Funny Power is out--genius way I'm running my air pumps

We have a lot of power outages here in Central Florida. I have battery powered air pumps as part of my power outage kit. They can run the sponge filters I have in each tank for about 36 hours on a pair of D cell batteries. I also have a generator. But I do not turn that on unless we are...

10 Gallon Tank How Frequently Should I do Water Changes

This is a biggie in my opinion. If you keep tank water similar to tap water, you do not have to worry about shocking fish with a change. You can move fish from one tank to another and be confident water will be similar. You can do a near 100% water change if you have an emergency need.

55 Gallon Tank Is a water softener ok?

I bypass my water softener for aquarium use. I found that my fish tolerated the water softener water okay, but the plants did not like it. Whether your fish will tolerate the softened water will depend on the species. My water softener has valves to allow water to bypass. I run the faucet...

What to do when your water changer isn't strong enough?

Many new faucets have restricted water flow to conserve water usage. I have that issue after we installed new faucets in the bathroom. I can solve the problem by running the python out the window to a garden hose and get as much suction as I want. However, I find that to be a pain and that...

Low Maintenance 29 Gallon Shrimp Tank

Glad to hear that. I like HOB better. Do you advocate sponge in addition to HOB for back up and additional aeration? Do you put a sponge cover on HOB intake to avoid sucking up baby shrimp?

Low Maintenance 29 Gallon Shrimp Tank

Do I need to worry about the flow rate? The existing HOB seems to create a lot of water flow.

Do you count the opportunity cost of all the time spent that could have been spent doing something else?

Low Maintenance 29 Gallon Shrimp Tank

I planning a 29 gallon shrimp tank. I have about 30 or 40 blue shrimp to start it with. I want to create an ideal breeding situation. How would you set it up? Just use the 30 or 40 I have that came from an initial population of 9? Or add some new blood for more diverse genetic material...

    Speed Water Change Techniques

I like the spray bar idea. That might allow me to fill faster. Don't really need temp control. Water is usually within 4 degrees or so. 4 degrees colder in the winter and 4 degrees warmer in the summer. 50% ish water change, 2 degree temp change seems like it should be no big deal. I have...

    Speed Water Change Techniques

Have had a lot going on the last 9 months or so. Been into bicycle riding which has taken a lot of time away from fish keeping. Tanks have been a bit neglected. Also was diagnosed with prostate cancer in March. Surgery was April 19. I am recovering well and prognosis is good. 95% 15 year...

    Speed Water Change Techniques

I have been a bit lazy with my water changes recently, but have gotten back in the groove the last three weeks. I have let go of perfection and am going for speed. I have decided that you can get away with sub-par maintenance if you just keep up with the water changes. I am going to share my...

How Long Until Driftwood Stops Lowering pH?

My GH and KH are similar to yours and I have found that driftwood does nothing to my pH. However, my pH is higher than yours - around 8.0.

    Move Shrimp Colony Questions

I have a growing shrimp colony in a 10 gallon tank. They were marketed as "Blue Shrimp". I they are some variant of Neocaridina Davidi. The colony started with nine in May and is now at least 50 maybe more. Difficult to count. There were a lot of shrimplettes in the first few weeks. Then a...

    Nitrates

You can use fish for ammonia. This is called a “fish-in” cycle. Some people prefer this method since it is more natural. Some people believe this method produces a more stable cycle. The drawback is that you have to be careful not to let too much ammonia or nitrites accumulate. Ammonia and...

    Nitrates

You appear to have a cycle that is sufficient to convert the ammonia you have supplied to nitrates. However, you have not supplied very much ammonia. If you put fish in, they may produce more ammonia than your cycle can process. If that is the case, ammonia and nitrites will accumulate. Your...
