    I've got fry!

Thanks Lucy! I now have three fry (I think). It's amazing how much they've grown in just a few days. I'm going away for a week, so I hope they all make it.

    I've got fry!

Thanks guys! Yeah it looks like it. An adult female might be able to swallow one if she really wanted to...but mama doesn't seem interested. I dumped in bbs until I saw a fry eating them. I think I could sit watching fry eat all day long. ;D Parents were more than happy to finish off the...

    I've got fry!

Thought I'd share here...I made my family come see them but they're not quite as ecstatic as I am. I've had Heterandria formosa ("least killifish"...but actually a livebearer) in a tank with black phantom tetras for a while now. Strange combination, but it works fine, both species ignore...

    betta on bottom

Is he bloated? Could you post a pic of him? If you've had him for two years, he may simply be going downhill due to old age. Sounds like he's well taken care of, but sometimes bettas don't live all that long due to the way they are raised and transported as youngsters.

    Petco plastic aquariums, toxic?

Your shrimp died because of the ammonia spike when they were placed into a tank without a cycled filter. Shrimp are very sensitive to pollutants. You can cycle a tank fishless using ammonia. However, this is a bit of a long process. I just leave extra filters running in my permanent...

What is worse? Nitrates or Temperature change.

Do you have a nitrate reading? In my opinion, in the short term a large temperature swing is a lot more likely to harm fish than slightly high nitrate. I take it you do water changes with a python or similar. I've not used one, so I don't know how they work, but can the water flow be turned...

How do you tell if your fixture is dead?

Thanks for the responses Pepetj and Whtmex. I figured out what was wrong. I was playing around with it and realized the knob that turns it on/off had come loose. Screwed it back in tight, put the thing back together and it worked.

What is your favorite type of betta?

Whoops didn't look close enough. I've never seen a spadetail here, rarely come across them online either. It's too bad, they're a really cool variety.

How do you tell if your fixture is dead?

Today I got up and one of my lights (normal fluorescent strip) was off. I thought the bulb had died so I replaced it, but the new one wouldn't turn on. Replaced the starter, nothing happened. Partially disassembled it to see if anything is obviously broken, but to me it looks fine. I know...

What is your favorite type of betta?

Rogue - I love the blue marble you posted. It's too bad veiltails are out of style right now, cause that is a stunning fish. Cognity - mustard gas butterfly halfmoon. I had to google it cause I don't know if I've actually seen one before. Check out this link-lots of gorgeous fish, but see...

How to bring fish to school with me

I thought about that, but I don't think I want to leave a betta with someone else for the entire summer. I haven't met anyone else at my school who keeps fish (it's a small school, so I'm not too hopeful).

Bloated Guppy with non-moving pectoral fin.

Have you seen any progress in your cycle? If not you may want to re-dose with TSS. Perhaps the first batch you used was bad. Ammonia is very stressful for fish and could be the cause of the guppy's disease.

What is your favorite type of betta?

I used to have a mg crowntail! He was purdy. I personally have a soft spot for dragon hmpk's. I like normal hm's that are interesting colors like yellow or marble. I'm a big fan of butterflies too...the red ones are just stunning.

Bloated Guppy with non-moving pectoral fin.

HI rollinghills, It could be tb, which seems to be quite common in store-bought guppies. I've read that tb can cause open lesions/ulcers, though I've never seen that personally. Bloating and sudden death are definitely possible symptoms of tb. Your fish does not appear to have had dropsy, which...

Female Betta with a swollen belly

HI kaityd, welcome to Fishlore If you don't clean the tank ammonia will build up naturally. Ammonia is toxic and will stress your betta way more than tank cleaning. You should be doing daily water changes on a tank that is not filtered (but all tanks should be filtered). Here's an intro to...

    Bloated guppy with fin rot

That sounds more like "normal" finrot, i.e. a purely external infection (your guppy's behavior supports this belief). But it's always tough to be certain. That's good. Sometimes with new fish the stress of moving kills a few of them initially, but the ones that make it past a certain amount...

How to bring fish to school with me

Lynda thanks for the link. Ugh a $100 pet fee is crazy. Forget that... I think I'll just have to stick with plants for now. Oh well, it's just a few more years, I guess I'll survive...

    Bloated guppy with fin rot

Hmm I dunno. Sounds like your fish came infected with any number of things. It could be tb, or it might not be. I think it was a good decision to put him back in the main tank. I'd just keep a close eye on them from now on. I wouldn't bother trying to medicate again. A damaged fin should...
