Question Will cutting back roots harm aquatic plants?

What kinds of plants? I have successfully done this to anubias, pothos and amazon swords all the time but don't have experience with trimming the roots on much else.

    Best floating plant for betta

Are the leaves growing on a stem like this? That would make in annubias in which case you shouldn't put it in the substrate as it is a rhysome plant and doesn't do well in substrate. It does better tucked into wood or on decor. Sorry I can't clearly zoom for some reason.

    Help Oil On Water Surface?

Your picture looks just like my tank. I find this is very common and not detrimental to the health as my Betta lived for almost 5 years :) It is harmless but if you are set on removing it I have used the cup trick mentioned above as water changes with a siphon didn't remove it well at all since...

    Any Artists Here?

I really enjoy pen and ink when I have the time although I have been playing with paints a bit more lately due to lack of time. I'll attach a photo of one called "Denali in the buff". I did this for my brother after he summited Denali. The name ended up being perfect as when by brother was at...

Help I Don't Know My Betta Type

Bloat doesn't mean fat. It can mean that dehydrated food expanded in their stomach, they are blocked up and cannot pass their food, that they were fed too much at one time to the point their tiny stomach (the size of their eye) visibly expanded their proportions or even that they are sick...

Need betta help quick. PH shock? (Picks included)

It is hard to know if the Tetra Safe Start worked without testing the water. I would keep the water clean for now and worry about your cycle after your test kit gets here. When you have the water test kit on hand you can ensure that while cycling the water is always within a safe range for the...

Need betta help quick. PH shock? (Picks included)

You have some obvious fin rot. The Indian almond leaves can't in my experience cause such a drastic pH swing that would cause shock so I would not remove them as they can help with the fin rot. I would leave him in the larger tank and not put him back in the vase as it is easier to keep water...

Help I Don't Know My Betta Type

There is scale separation on the belly. That is too bloated IMO and there is a problem. But some people find overweight dogs "cute" and "spoiled" and my opinion is that is cruel but it is just that an opinion.

Question Should I Still Drip Acclimate?

I have had great success with the float and plop method. Especially if they have been transported for awhile my priority is to get them out of the dirty water sooner. When you open the bag and let air the built up waste after transport can become toxic quickly. Personal preference though.

I'm Very Discouraged By My Serpae Tetras.

Common consensus in fish keepers is stable pH is more important than "perfect" pH so most advise against using the pH and hardening product you mentioned. And more water changes/clean water exponentially more important than perfect pH. What is wrong with the water where you live? You can...

I'm Very Discouraged By My Serpae Tetras.

Just an FYI since you are using medications if you left the charcoal in your filter the charcoal is removing the medicine. I would separate the serpaes together in my opinion. You will be able to watch them better in the smaller tank plus if one has it I would assume the other one does too...

Coworker Needs Advice On Bullying Angel

Strongly disagree with this statement. Angels will likely begin to pair off and need enough space for territories otherwise the aggression issues will intensify. I would recommend dividing the tank with lots of tall plant/decor to break up sight lines but if the aggression continues then rehome...

    Hey! New Fishkeeper!

I have a similar experience of not doing the best while younger except I consistently kept fish even through college. The fish that changed it for me was a Betta with the biggest personality of any fish I had had before. So I kept learning more and upgrading his tank because I was so attached to...

Help My Sister Didn't Maintain Her Fish Tank. Please Help!!

For clarification when I suggested shipping it was under the knowledge that @Andrew3402 was there and could do the shipping without relying upon his sister to pack everything perfectly right for safe transport. I do agree rehoming is a better option but letting go can be easier when you know...

Try pinching the hose while siphoning. Controlling the flow rate will help you get the most out of the "vacuuming".

Help My Sister Didn't Maintain Her Fish Tank. Please Help!!

I actually prefer in between these two posts (all are legit ways to do it though). So a large water change once for someone who is short on time is easier. Plus this tank has some cleanup due and when siphoning a small tank like this water disappears sooo fast it is hard to do 30%. Also prefer...

Help My Sister Didn't Maintain Her Fish Tank. Please Help!!

I wouldn't replace it. I would gently wash out any grossness trapped in the cartridge in old tank water then put it back. Cycle bacteria will be on it as well and it is just a waste of money to keep replacing them until they are falling apart.

Help My Sister Didn't Maintain Her Fish Tank. Please Help!!

I agree with @Crispii 's water change amounts. You must still have a cycle then! Make sure to clean your filter in old tank water ONLY not tap. Also do you have a conditioner for the new water?
