So far so good but afraid to change the filter

Thank you all for the helpful advice, I really appreciate it. ccb04 - that's kind of what I was thinking about the filter pad. I'm glad you've found a solution for the Aqueon... Last night I changed some water, added a sponge, and gave the filter pad an aggressive shaking in old tank...

So far so good but afraid to change the filter

My tank has been running for almost 2 months. It cycled after about a month. I started with 5 platies and added TSS at week 2 or 3. Last week I re-homed 2 of the males and most of the babies that appeared the first week. I added 3 small false julii cories. So now the tank is stocked with...

Newbie here! Cycling tank nearly done?

Sounds like you are doing well. My boyfriend says the same things about me... that I'm being neurotic, that most fishkeepers don't put forth nearly as much effort, and that this site is "the PETA equivalent for fish people"! Oh, well, he is letting me do my thing (the tank is at his house)...

    Too many platies!

Yeah, I figured there'd be more babies for awhile longer. I just found a pretty good LFS (yay!), so I'll see if they'll take them (assuming they have more). One of the girls has been harassing the other two females ever since the males left, but things seemed to have improved since I added...

    I think I have a problem

Related story... I went fishing yesterday and called my mom to ask her the best way to cook the fish we caught. I said, "We caught some fish today...How do I cook them for dinner?" Due to the bad phone connection and my mom's old age (haha, she's only 60!), she heard, "We got some...

What (if anything) can I add to a 20G with 5 platties?

I rehomed my 2 male platies and kept the 3 females and a couple babies. Last week I got 3 little false julli cory...they are so cute, I love them! They seem to really like all the caves in the rock formation. So far they are getting along well with the platies. Hopefuly I can get a couple...

    Too many platies!

ranga97 - I put an ad on Craigslist and a man and his daughter took the 2 males and most of the babies. They said they have a 40 gallon, so hopefully they're doing ok there. Now I have the 3 females, 4 babies, and 3 new cory. When the babies get bigger, I will find homes for the males...

Help First Time Poster Having Major Issues!

Hmm, I don't know about the foam... I am new to all this as well. I do remember reading on the back of the Prime bottle though that you could use 5x the usual dose in an emergency.

    Too many platies!

Thanks, Ken - I thought that was where I'd posted it! Whoops! Marc - Thanks for your comment, it made me feel a little better. I think you are probably right.

    Too many platies!

Update: I posted an add on Craigslist and someone came and picked up the 2 males and a few of the fry. I felt guilty letting them go, but the man claimed to have a 40G community tank, so i'm hoping for the best for them.

    Too many platies!

Ha, that's interesting about the "native born"! I imagine most platies are native born, but that's funny they are advertising them as such. I was kinda thinking that nature would take it's course and all but maybe one or two fry from each batch would get eaten, but it looks like we have too...

    Too many platies!

I have a 20G tank with 5 grown platies... one had babies and 9 survived in the tank with the adults... they are about a month old now and the adults really don't even chase after them anymore. The 3 grown females all look very pregnant right now, so I think there will be even more babies...

    Cycling w/ fish + TSS: 0, 0, 40+ x 3 days. Ok to change water?

Here's a photo of the filter cartridges my Aqueon 20 filter takes (petco photo): So are you saying I cut into the white part and put new carbon in there? My readings were the same this morning... 0, 0, 40-80. Do you think I can do a water change this weekend?

    Cycling w/ fish + TSS: 0, 0, 40+ x 3 days. Ok to change water?

I just want to clarify that the tank was going for 10 days before I used TSS. I put the TSS in (170ml - enough for 50 gallons; my tank is 20G) and did nothing for 7 days (though I did test). On the 7th day, I did a 15% water change with pre-tx'd water, which other than potentially losing...

    Help Cory Cat die off....

I don't know if it's true or not, but I remember reading that driftwood can lower pH. Where did you get the driftwood? Is the pH of your tap water also 6.0? You live in Baltimore? This is off topic, but I'm in Baltimore as well and haven't been about to find a good LFS. Is there any...

    Cycling w/ fish + TSS: 0, 0, 40+ x 3 days. Ok to change water?

Thanks for the input. The water isn't cloudy, it's just the pouch (?) that the carbon is in that looks dirty (i.e. brown, not white). Then again, this is the first filter I've had, so I really don't have a good idea of what a really dirty one looks like! The flow seems to be fine. I think...

20 Gallon Tank Correct way to vacuum tank?

Hello, I asked a similar question a few weeks ago and received a lot of good info: I don't think specific techniques were discussed in that thread, however. I don't have a python, but use a siphon that has a hand pump you squeeze to start the suction. It works great and cost less than $15.

    Cycling w/ fish + TSS: 0, 0, 40+ x 3 days. Ok to change water?

Hello, I started a 20G tank on May 3rd with 5 platties. Everyone on this site was super helpful and gave me lots of suggestions for keeping the fish healthy during the cycle. For the first 1.5 week I did daily ~30% water changes + Prime. Ammonia and nitrite were around .25-.50...
