Best way to quarantine new aquarium plants?

Hey all! I have a few aquarium plants coming that I ordered from ebay and I would like to quarantine them for awhile before adding them to my tank. From my research I've seen people recommend 10 minute bath's of sea salt, hydrogen peroxide, and/or Potassium Permanganate. For those of you who...

    Praecox Rainbows And Bolivian Rams?

My tank is around 76-77 degrees. I think the Rams would be fine anywhere from 75-78. I did not drip acclimate the Rams. I temperature acclimated for 20minutes (closed bag) and then, while still floating in the tank, opened their bags to remove 1cup of their water, and added 1 cup of tank water...

    Praecox Rainbows And Bolivian Rams?

When I first got them I asked for 3 females and 2 males but was not diligent in watching the guy and ended up at home with 3 males and 2 females, so I went and grabbed 2 more females the next day so I ended up with 4 females, 3 males. So, while I think 5-6 females, 2 males would be a better...

    Bubbler Ornament?

I have this one and while I think it is an awesome decoration, I actually had to disconnect the airstone from the dragon and hang the airstone loose in the tank because after about 2-3 weeks the bubbles started getting "caught" in the dragon and making a loud glug sound when the bubble of air...

Help New-bought Guppy Tail And Fin Lost Color

Cycling a tank can take 10 weeks or more. Your initial tests were 0 because you had no ammonia source (fish) and no bacteria to create nitrites from ammonia. So, you are now doing what is known as a "fish-in" cycle (using fish as an ammonia source) so you definitely need to get on top of water...

Help New-bought Guppy Tail And Fin Lost Color

If your Nitrite is 5ppm+ I find it hard to believe your other fish are doing fine :(. I would do two 50%+ water changes (a few hours apart) to start getting that down and dose with Seachem Prime to neutralize it in the meantime (and continue with water changes every day until your cycle...

    Praecox Rainbows And Bolivian Rams?

I have 7 praecox rainbows and 2 bolivian rams right now. My pH is around 7.4 (soft water with low KH that I keep stable with crushed coral). I haven't seen any issues.

    Bolivian Rams Not Eating

My gravel IS pretty deep... not sure where I looked to get information about that but it said to make it 4".... yet everyone else's tank that I've seen is not nearly as deep. I will give it another week or two (with lights off, larger sinking pellets, pipette etc.) before doing...

    Bolivian Rams Not Eating

That makes me feel better to hear! I will definitely try feeding with the lights off. I'll give that a go for a few days as well as get a slightly larger size of the sinking pellet before looking into a tank divider (not sure if that would even help until they aren't too scared to come out...

    Bolivian Rams Not Eating

Right now I'm feeding a mix of Hikari Cichlid Gold Sinking Pellets, Hikari micro pellets, Hikari algae wafers, freeze-dried blood worms and freeze-dried mysis shrimp (soaked in tank water). On the first day, I think(?) both rams ate a pellet or two so I'm not sure it is them being too picky to...

    Bolivian Rams Not Eating

I got my fish last Tuesday (Oct 1st), 7 neon rainbowfish, a bristlenose pleco and 2 bolivian rams. Everyone seems to be doing well except that I don't think my two rams are eating. Whenever I feed them (once a day right now), the rainbowfish go crazy and eat a ton and the rams hide. I've tried...

Ammonia At 0.25 - Should I Be Concerned

What kind of rainbowfish? I hope it is a neon dwarf (praecox) as any other species would definitely be too large for a 10gal... but they also like to be in groups of at least 5-6 so I can't imagine he is very happy alone. Aside from that, did you cycle the tank before adding the fish? Or have...

    1 Gallon Tank Beginner Mistakes

It's always better late than never to learn about the correct way to have an aquarium. I had had lots of tanks growing up and even as recent as 6+ years ago but only found out that I had been doing it all wrong when I went to set up my most recent tank  It sounds like you've got...

    Python Vacuums

I love my python vacuum!!! It makes water changes so convenient! I siphon out the tank water and then add enough prime to condition the entire tank (i.e. if the tank is 30gal put in enough prime for 30gal of water) before adding in the tap water. I also make sure that the tap water is...

    Should I Get Another Female?

I definitely have room for 2 more females. I could possibly fit 3 because my filtration could handle it but AqAdvisor says that my stocking would then be at 105%. What do you think?

    Should I Get Another Female?

Hello! I recently stocked my newly cycled tank and got 5 neon rainbowfish (Melanotaenia praecox). I had asked for 2 males, 3 females but when I got home I noticed that I definitely had 3 males instead of two. Should I go back and get a third female to even out their numbers or do you think this...

    First Water Change Help

I'm just going to re-iterate the questions already asked... are there fish in your tank? Are you using a water conditioner? If you are doing a fishless cycle, you would not want to keep doing water changes because the bacteria need the ammonia present as a food source to grow. If you have fish...

    Cycling My First Tank

I've had to do multiple water changes (90%, 75%, 75%, 75% within a week or two) to try to keep up with the nitrate build-up (~160ppm, I didn't realize you needed to do water changes in a fishless cycle!!!) that was slowing down my bacteria eating the ammonia. I haven't seen any damage to my...

    Beginner Stocking Help 75 Gal

I used AqAdvisor to help me with stocking (specifically how many fish would be a good number for my tank & who would get along). Poor Water Quality

I had actually heard nitrites were MORE deadly than ammonia because it reduces the amount of oxygen in the blood, essentially causing the fish to suffocate from the inside out. Can anyone else confirm or deny this?

    Seachem Stability

Ahh ok. So your issue with bottled bacteria is that it is more difficult to follow the cycling process & lends itself to more mistakes (i.e. people stocking a tank before it is actually cycled)? I can definitely see where you are coming from, but in general I would say that that is more user...

How Many Fish Should I Stock After Cycling?

I am (hopefully) nearing the end of cycling my 29gal tank. My current plan is to eventually have these guys: 2 bolivian rams 2 golden dwarf (goldeneye) cichlids 5 neon dwarf rainbowfish 1 bristlenose pleco I have a bacteria colony that can process 2ppm of ammonia in 24hrs, so how many fish do...

    Seachem Stability

Why won't the readings make sense after adding bottled bacteria? Also, are you saying that after a fishless cycle is complete & fish are added, they die more often if a person had used bottled bacteria to cycle their tank? Or are you only saying that fish during fish-in cycles die more often if...

What's Going On? Ammonia Present After Full Week Of 2ppm Gone After 24hrs

What's Going On? Ammonia Present After Full Week Of 2ppm Gone After 24hrs

Thank you for the insight about the crushed coral - I'll order some! And yes! After the water changes the ammonia is back to processing 2ppm within 24hrs. It's nice to hear that the higher nitrite reading is expected & I'll do another water change tonight to get the nitrates back down below...

What's Going On? Ammonia Present After Full Week Of 2ppm Gone After 24hrs

I did another 75% water change on Friday (2 days after the initial 90% water change). The Nitrates looked to be about 5-10ppm after the water change but they were already back up to ~60-80ppm last night. I think the high nitrates previously must have been giving me false low nitrite readings...

    Adding Declorinator

Because I have a python gravel vacuum that hooks directly up to my sink, I add the full dose of water conditioner to the tank (i.e. how much it would need if it was full) before filling it up from the tap. I usually add another 1/2-full dose of water conditioner after the tank is full for good...
