In need of some advice for new tank...

Lol I find it funny too. I used to dread the ideas of them but now I have them in all my tanks! (Except the flowerhorn one, tried it and he kept poking these XL mysteries I had, took them out, feared for their lives in case they ever flipped over). I have 4 nerites and 2 mysteries in the 75g, 2...

    75g stocking...

Yea I probably sounded confusing. Here's the breakdown: Option 1- 6 Discus, no other fish Option 2- Community tank with the cardinal tetras and the ram pairs, cories, gourami, etc. But leave out the discus Discus should really only be in a species only tank as I've heard they can be shy and...

In need of some advice for new tank...

If you're looking for some sort of clean up crew, in a tank size such as yours, snails will do wonders! They eat excess food, eat algae and keep your tank clean basically. Added bonus is they have a very small bioload compared to plecos.

I believe that you may be overstocked. I would do either a discus tank or leave the discus out and put the other fish in.

    Best Water Conditioner?

Another vote for Seachem Prime. Bought the 2L jug off Amazon, it was supposed to last me at least a year and a half with one tank. but with all these tanks now, I'll be lucky to get half a year lol.

    Sooo...who's still around?

Hi nice to meet you! I'm fairly new here, joined only four months ago. I have a severe case of MTS that I don't think can really be cured lol. I had six tanks at one point that I've downsized to four at this point. But that could change at any point lol. I noticed you posted in my goldfish...

    New Goldfish Tank!

For health issues, I heard the ones with the telescope or bubble eyes usually don't live as long as the other kinds. Some superstitious people also think the black ones, black moors don't live as long either. I would just get the Fluval off Amazon if you can, it's much cheaper. Usually $30-40...

    New Goldfish Tank!

For a 40g with goldfish, you could probably only do 3 or 4 fancies at the most. You'd also be better off with a canister such as a Fluval 306 or even a 406, since they're really messy.

55 gallon tank vs 65 gallon tank?

Didn't you make another thread about this before? 55 gallon because of 4 ft footprint. I'm not really a fan of tall tanks... you have to reach further in to do any kind of maintenance, but that's just me. Fish prefer bigger surface areas too.

How come my Ammonia and Nitrite level stay the same?

I've cycled a lot of tanks with Stability in the past and I know it works. Recently cycled a total of six or seven tanks in the past three or four months since I joined this site with it and can vouch for its effectiveness, so can many others. Maybe give it another shot. They might have...

Watts per gallon is an old method for determining how much light is needed, and to my knowledge, no longer an accurate means. I think the new measurement now is PUR and PAR.

    20 gallon long stocking (possibly)...

The sterbais at my local Petsmart, the ones that carry them also charge $9... But I know a LFS owned by Thai people that only charges $3 each. I'm not kidding, I took a pic and showed Geoff lol.
  24. Dom90

    20 gallon long stocking (possibly)...

Great! Now I just have to find where they're cheaper than Petsmart... Not willing to pay $9 a fish, it's not even my main display tank.
  25. Dom90

    dying plants

Why bother using individual macro nutrients when you can knock your fertilizing needs with Flourish comp? The way you are doing I'm thinking you're deficient in one nutrient or another and that is also why your plants are dying in addition to lighting issues.
  26. Dom90

How come my Ammonia and Nitrite level stay the same?

Some bacterial products contain bacteria that are not self-sustaining. What this means is that they will live for a short time, maybe one or two weeks and then die off. I believe Fluval may be one of these such products. I would grab a bottle of Tetra SafeStart or Seachem Stability and...

    20 gallon long stocking (possibly)...

Need to keep the wife happy before she makes me start shutting down tanks... She likes the coloring of cardinal and glo tetras (jellyfish gene) so I need to know if glo tetras can live in warmer temps.

Can a Tang be in a 10 gallon aquarium?

I've heard the minimum for saltwater should be 29g. Correct me if I'm wrong but I think tangs should be in tanks 55g or more.

I have, started out with three orandas for a fish-in cycle with TSS.
  30. Dom90

    20 gallon long stocking (possibly)...

Unfortunately, I've never seen any of those rasboras variants in any of the LFS's near me.
  32. Dom90

    20 gallon long stocking (possibly)...

Ok anyway, back to stocking ideas... what are other higher temp tetras besides cardinals? I've only kept cardinals in the past and most of the other tetras I see prefer cooler temps and congos are too big for a 20 gallon or I would've just transferred those from the other tank.
  33. Dom90

    20 gallon long stocking (possibly)...

Lol well, the 20L was free whereas the 40B wasnt, so I feel the downsizing is justified. Plus I dont really have time anymore to be breeding or raising juvies.

    20 gallon long stocking (possibly)...

Lol yes, my plans for world domination! muhahaha
  35. Dom90

    20 gallon long stocking (possibly)...

Well, I did some tank rearranging to make this tank possible. The original breeding stock I had in the 40B (the 10 Nyererei cichlids) turned out to have only one female so those plans have changed... so I'm going to return the 40B and stock the 20 long in question.

So the Buenos Aires tetras would work with both the ram and Aeneus?
  37. Dom90

    20 gallon long stocking (possibly)...

I know some of you saw this coming lol... I been busy getting rid of excess fish (extra male Nyererei cichlids) and some unwanted fish in the 75g and stocking my 80g with 5 orandas... Next project! The "sump" that came with the 80g could make a nice tank for a community of <2" fish! Here's what...

    Best filter media?

I bought the 4L of the Seachem Matrix and slowly switched over all four of my tanks from Biomax to Matrix after I found out about its ability to support anaerobic bacteria. It's still too early to say whether or not this is true but Seachem is a really good brand.

    20 Gallon Hex stocking

None of those fish that you mentioned would work in a 20 gallon hex as I'm sure the footprint is smaller than even that of a standard 10 gallon tank.

Any ideas breeding fish for profit

I have noticed Ocellatus are pretty hard to find as well, each one sells for about $30 at a LFS nearby... even online it's about the same price.
  42. Dom90

Is it possible to cycle/prepare a brand new FILTER only?

You can cycle a filter by running it with a 5 gallon bucket if you prefer. Because you basically cycle the filter, not the tank. Just dose the proper amount of pure ammonia as you would normally do in a fishless cycle.
  43. Dom90

Shipment comes in tomorrow! Startup help!

You are correct. This is what you want to use for a fishless cycle.

    Naming my new girl

If my knowledge of Greek mythology serves me correctly, the Greek goddess of the moon is actually Artemis.
  45. Dom90

Why do I have no nitrates?

It actually seems like your tank is very under stocked if all you have are two goldfish in a 60 gallon. That is probably why you are not seeing any nitrates. What I would suggest is to either cut down on the water change amount and/or frequency or to increase the bioload, hence get more goldfish.

PWC today and water tests 1.0 ppm ammonia!

You could maybe add 2, check water levels for a couple days and see if you get any ammonia/nitrite spikes, wait a couple days, then add the other 2. But you should wait till you get over this mini-spike first and wait for things to get back to normal.
  50. Dom90

PWC today and water tests 1.0 ppm ammonia!

In a 20 long, the most I would recommend adding fish at one time is maybe 1-2 fish. If you had a 75g or 125g tank, maybe you could add 8 rasboras at once. It's always better to go slow and add fish at a slower pace. The whole schooling principle does apply but fish will be ok if they are not in...
