Can Otocinclus Live With Siamese Algae Eaters?

A true SAE is not aggressive and will do just fine with otos. I have 1 of the former and 5 of the latter in a 55 gal.

    Siamese Algae Eaters

I've had a single SAE for almost 3 years now and it is 4". I've never had black beard algae but I did have green and he ate it. I have read that they do school but my single seems to be doing just fine in a 55 gallon. He tends to "school" with the gold barbs.

Well, you are very knowledgeable and well spoken - I thought you were a lot older than 14 myself, but nowhere near 60! 60 is even older than me!

    Overstocking or Understocking fish

Be careful with the names at the LFS - the stores around me mislabel fish all the time. Pictures or descriptions would be helpful.

How Many Fish Do You Have?

    Overstocking or Understocking fish

Gold Barbs (my avatar) will work. They are a schooling fish and add colour to the tank.

Hello, I'm back and setting up a new five gallon!

If you haven't yet started with cycling, you can fill the new filter with seeded media from your 20gal and right away add your betta and shrimp at the same time. The seeded media gives you an instant cycle. You can't leave the seeded media in an empty tank for more than about 6 hours or the BB...

How do I know when my tank is fully cycled?

FYI - just to clarify you are not fully cycled until both ammonia and nitrites are 0, and nitrates are around 10. How many fish are in the tank now?

40g Breeder tank build and progress!

As our tanks mature the nitrate test is the most important one IMO. I now buy the individual nitrate test as this test in my master kit ran out. I still have the master kit for the rest of the tests.
  14. KarenLM

Insanely high ammonia levels, unsure why?

The test kits are not as accurate as really expensive equipment, but the liquid kits are better than strips and give us a general idea of what is in the tank.

    55 Gallon Redo

When I was trying to get rid of my snails that came in on the plants, I would check just above the water line in the morning, squish them and drop them in the tank - my fish went crazy for them and ate every one I dropped.

    Dadio's Waterpond Paradise Project

Yes indeed. I tinker a lot in my gardens as well - 20 and counting; no water (other than a wood pool with Virginia Creeper all over it) but over 800 plants!

    Nitrate Loving Land Plants

Yes. I'll have to start trimming it to keep it on the top of the tank. I've had pothos before all over my bedroom wall - it will literally root itself right to the wall and it's hard to get off if you leave it.

I need my tank to cycle....

I believe that is correct. I can't remember, but have you put filtered media in this tank from one of your other tanks?

Yes. My nitrates went above 40 in just a couple of days before. Photo above from today.

    Nitrate Loving Land Plants

My pH is around 7.5 and my pothos that I put in on June 6, 2015 has doubled in size! Haven't done a WC in 2 weeks, 34 fish in 55gal and just tested NO3 - 30. This pothos has saved me a lot of bucket lugging! This photo is from day 1.

Would this over stock a tank

I personally would add the tetras last and in two groups as they are the most fragile of your list. I would actually add the cories first once the tank is fully cycled. Just my thoughts.

The water is not the part that is "cycled". The filter is what you have to move over with the fish.

    fish tank still not cycled?

Seachem Replenish may not be necessary unless you have a softener. Well water is great for your fish and it doesn't have chlorine (unless you are in an area where it occurs naturally in ground water) so doesn't need conditioner. I rarely change my filter media and if I do I only change one of...

I need my tank to cycle....

I'm not sure. I don't use it. Also, FYI, from reading some of your posts in other threads (ie raw meat) I'm concerned you are overfeeding your fish. I have 34 (67") fish in my 55gal and I feed 6 shrimp pellets and 1/4 teaspoon crushed flakes each day, bloodworms maybe once every two weeks...

    Different types of mosses

Marimo moss balls are technically algae but they don't encourage other types of algae, and my clean-up crew does not eat the moss balls at all. They add a dark velvetty texture to the tank. I have even cut some up to make a carpet around the base of my larger rocks.

Your filter media is where most of the BB is. Be sure to put the old media over in the 36 with the fish. And I would try to clean it rather than replace it to keep that BB. If you do end up replacing the media once you put things back in the 55 make sure to add Stability as you may have a mini...

What is the secret in keeping neon tetra's alive

I have tried neons 3 times in my tank, all after cycling and have "0" left. A total of 44 bought - nice schools. I will not be trying them ever again. As Dadio has stated, it's more likely you'll get a weak batch than a good one. And if they are weak they may bring disease into your tank. IMO...

I have collected mosquito larvae from my rain barrels, dosed them in hot water and fed them to my fish - they love them. Not quite the red meat you're talking about, but "meat".
