When to be concerned about platy shyness?

Hey everybody! How long do most platys take to get less timid, and what are signs that I should be concerned? More details if it helps: I am thrilled to say that, last Saturday, I got my first fish! I have a 29 gallon which I fishless cycled. I am still a little nervous that it may not have a...

    Birth Survival Rates?

    Thanks very much!

    Birth Survival Rates?

Hey everyone! I’ve newly added 3 platies to my 29 gallon aquarium (they’re the first addition, as I think they will be hardy as the tank fully stabilizes in its cycle). Two are female and one is male, and, unsurprisingly, I think one is pregnant. As this is still very early on and platies are...

    Cycling Stuck At 1ppm Ammonia

Welcome to the hobby and the site! As MrBryan723 said, 1 ppm ammonia is probably a little high. Could you switch to doing daily water changes, or every other day? It might help you cycle along a little and keep your fish less stressed. You wouldn't need to vacuum the gravel every time, which...

    Funny My Sister's Tank

Ah, okay, I understand now. I'd put the platy on the male's side seeing as they have been stocked together before. If your tank divider is adjustable, it might be best to give them a little extra room as well as they'll be sharing.

    Funny My Sister's Tank

If the platy is already in there and there haven't been any problems, I'd leave it however it is. If a conflict does arise, then switch it over. I'm not super familiar on platy-betta compatibility, so anyone else's input would be very helpful!

    Funny My Sister's Tank

Yeah, I've got to agree with Repolie. A betta would just be a little too incompatible. Maybe just keep it a white cloud tank, which could actually make for a nice-looking tank. As for name ideas, it could be cool to do sky-based names to relate back to their namesake, such as Luna, Mona, Skylar...

Question My Betta Fish Of Almost 2 Years Doesn’t Eat

Can you order online? It's in stock on amazon: https://www.amazon.com/Kanaplex-5-g-0-18-oz/dp/B00CJ0VY8G/ref=sr_1_1?keywords=dropsy+medicine+for+fish+kanaplex&qid=1565315473&s=pet-supplies&sr=1-1 I'm not an expert, but I've heard that both Melafix and Pimafix have been successfully used to treat...

Question My Betta Fish Of Almost 2 Years Doesn’t Eat

I'm so sorry about your betta! Hopefully, this can help you with some places to start, at least. I'm also not by any means an expert, but I think kallililly1973 is right in regards to the dropsy symptoms, as her stomach is slightly protruding and her scales look stuck out. You'd know best...

I'm New Here, And To The Hobby... Hi!

I'm also very fond of the look of platys, but I am a little concerned over how, well, fertile they can be. I really don't want to overstock down the line. Has this been an issue for you? I'd like to breed fish, but also don't have the resources or space to set up a bunch of tanks. This thread is...

    20 Gallon Long Stocking Idea

It sounds like you have a great setup! In my very little hands-on aquarium experience, I've been using an AquaClear 50 and have quite liked everything about it, so I'm sure that will work out well for you! Having that bigger size will be helpful with handling all the waste. As for the live...

    20 Gallon Long Stocking Idea

MrBryan723 is right that 20g probably isn't enough for two fantails, but I imagine one would be okay. I'd probably do one fantail, a pleco, and the minnows. You're in the goldfish corner of the aquarium world, so I'm assuming you're already comfortable with the idea of big water changes. What's...

    Cycling Confusion

An update on this: I did about an 80% water change on Sunday. I checked the pH today and it went up to 6.8 or so, so I think that's a good sign. I let the ammonia sit at about 0, maybe a little above, for the last day or so. I'm not sure if it's at 0 or 0.25, as it changes depending on the...

    Cycling Confusion

I will do a water change and then check the pH of my tap. I recall at the beginning of this the pH being a little higher than it is now, so I’m betting that might be the issue. Thank you so much for your help! I’ll test my pH from the tap once I have a chance and a day later leaving it out on...

    Cycling Confusion

Actually, I’ve been worried about pH. It’s at about 6.4, maybe a bit lower, so I’ve been thinking of getting some crushed coral. Thoughts? I’m keeping the temperature at about 78, but sometimes it gets down to more like 77 or 76. I’ll try testing with the bottled water next time I have a chance...

    The Never Ending Cycle

I very briefly removed the sponge and media out of the filter and into a bucket of tank water about halfway into this when I added some new decorations in. I wanted to unplug everything and was worried about the lack of flow into the filter as I knew it would take me a while. I did probably...

    Cycling Confusion

Thanks so much for your advice! I’ve only been adding ammonia when it gets down to 1 or lower ppm, but I’ve been adding enough that it seems odd that my nitrites haven’t gone up more. Should I only add more when it gets to zero, or maintain it at around 2 as I’ve read before? My nitrates also...

    Cycling Confusion

Hey everybody! So, I’ve been cycling for about 60 days now. I’m hitting a point where the empty tank seems pretty normal, but in worried that something has gone wrong. My tank is 29 gallons and I’m running an aqua clear 50 without the charcoal. I’ve been dosing up to about 2ppm every day...

    The Never Ending Cycle

My tank is 29 gallons and I’m using the bio rings that came with my aqua clear 50 filter. I mentioned below that the information in the post isn’t totally accurate to my tank, and I explained the actual situation in a comment on it, but the sentiment remains. How long is too long before a tank...
