So in order to reduce the frequency of having to clean out my eheim classic 600 external filter I've added a home made pre-filter. It's basically a bodgy DIY affair. I cut some coarse filter sponge and wrapped it around the inlet of the filter.
It has the benefit of reducing the amount of...
I saw some Algae Eating Shrimp in my local pet shops and thought the looked pretty cool, I'm toying with the idea of getting some but not sure if they'd survive in my tank?
I have an established (open top planted) 40Gal tank containing:
3 x powder blue dwarf Gourami
3 x guppy
3 x SAE...
Just retested and I miss read the pH before. PH 7.6, GH 16+, KH 10, NO3 20, NO2 0
The water round here is pretty hard, we always have problems with limescale etc.
Yes Ed, I have an air stone with non return valve fitted. Although only comes on periodically during the day, mainly for effect.
Ah a non believer :-) lol.
Fish do die, I'm okay with that... Circle of life an all.
I do however want to be aware If there's an issue in my tank and my fish are suffering as a result. I do everything I can to ensure this is not the case.
I do also wander if my cleanup crew (9 Cory's) are...
No canopy, but I've looked around and no fish but Guppies don't strike me as being very jumpy. I've looked around the tank and can't see any bodies... The Gouramis are very small but wondering if they'ed chased the Guppys around at some point and stressed them out? No way the Guppy would fit in...
Just when I though I had it cracked...I've lost a couple of fish (literally gone) :-(
So my tank has been up and running for about 6 months. It is moderately planted, good filtration and even an air stone. Everything was fine until a couple of days ago when I noticed one of my...
@bigemrg you may well be right, it might be that my flow rate is too low, maybe it doesn't like being stored in a cold garage or maybe I got a duff one. I've ordered a replacement cartridge so will tinker and see if I can get more mileage out of the next one.
UPDATE 31/12/2017: So it seems that the filter element now needs replacing. I checked the output from the filter and it's almost upto 40ppm :-(
It didn't last quite as long as i'd hoped but the manufacturer does say that the product life is around 3 months but less if you have high Nitrate...
I had this, pretty normal I think. It shows that your water can support life, albeit algae. Where are you in the cycle, might be the nitrate coming up?
I personally wouldn't worry about it too much, could take the wood out and give it a scrub?
In my tank, my clean up crew (SAE) keep this stuff...
I too have used wood, also for many years with no problems. Couple of the bits I have in my current tank are coming up for 18 years old.
The only thing I can say about wood is it does seem to be a great place to grow algae, but my fish love it and it grows food for my algae eaters so happy...
Yeah, the filter suits my needs perfectly since I have a smallish tank and don't have to water change too often.
The filter is not too big so leave it in the sink when using it so no need for a tap (but thanks for the tip)
I pass the water through the filter fairly slowly (approx 2 litres per...
Another brief update, the pozanni filter is still working well and my plants are really thriving now I have more bio load in the tank reducing the nitrate even further, it looks like my water changes will be 2 weekly now instead of weekly since everything seems to be in balance.
I did complain...
