Hi, the filter needs to run 24/7 but ancillary items like air stone/powerhead don't.
Personally I would run the basic setup for a couple of weeks and make sure fish are happy with it, then I'd run with air stone and powered etc for a couple of weeks, then I'd set my schedule.

I recieved the proscape test kit yesterday and did most of the tests last night.
It's quite technical with different quantities of water and different bottles/test tubes for different tests.
I'll give it a few more tests to get used to it and do a bit of a review.

I don't think sun is an issue apart from UV degrading rubber (obviously check the manual) there will be a safe operating temp.
But then I live in the UK - too much sun's not really an issue here, ever!
I use RO and agree it's the best option or even the only practical solution for softening water. I'm quite sure that peat moss binds some of the carbonates and dissolved solids and will soften the water but i have no hands on experience with how effective it is as I've never used it as a primary...
