    New Canister Filter

Ok, so I stuffed as much as would fit into the canister, but it wasnt all of it. Is that ok? There wasn't much wriggle room. Wouls it do anything good to stick the left over media in the tank?

    New Canister Filter

Thanks for the input. So I can cut up The prefilter, sponge and the filter pad and stuff it along with seachem bio media into the canister and chuck the hob? I just want to make sure I have it right before doing anything as it took me a long time to get this tank right for my shrimp to be...

    New Canister Filter

I have 2 ac sponges and a handful of seachem bio media in my old filter, so I didn't think I could? I have a prefilter sponge on the intake, and I also have filter media draped over outlet on ac to modulate the flow or the cherries get blown around. But that's about it.

    New Canister Filter

I just set up a new canister filter (eheim 2213) on my 20g long planted shrimp tank (housing 2 amanos and some cherries). I have the older filter (AC 110) running on it simultaneously. The amanos have lived in the tank for 2+ years, the cherries for about 1. I can't seed the new filter with...

Cycle - low ph and kh, high gh and TDS

Will pick up coral tomorrow after work. I've been reminding myself I will probably lose my share of shrimp when I start, and not to rush the beginning. Getting an aged, stable tank is my #1 goal right now. In the future if the shrimp are successful and I have a nice colony going, I was...

Cycle - low ph and kh, high gh and TDS

Went ahead and tested: kh - 3 Gh 6 to 7 Ph 7.6 High range ph 7.8 Tds 229 I do see undissolved bits of baking soda on the gravel. Hope that's okay. Also, ph isn't too high, now, is it?

Cycle - low ph and kh, high gh and TDS

Thanks I like hearing people's experiences. I've wanted a shrimp tank for a long time, and now that my killifish have all died, I thought now was the time, though I am super nervous!

Cycle - low ph and kh, high gh and TDS

It doesn't have the ingredients listed. I got it based on seeing it recommended on various shrimp sites. It is supposed to raise gh/kh by a 1.0/0.5 ratio, but seemed to struggle with kh in my tank. Before this, I saw they had a stand alone kh product, but if seachem product works well, I...

Cycle - low ph and kh, high gh and TDS

Thanks for the help! Baking soda is in and I'll test in a couple of hours

Cycle - low ph and kh, high gh and TDS

It's just a filter, no separate unit. Baking soda it is. I was iffy on using it when I'm going to be housing shrimp. This is something I'd have to add each wc, correct?

Cycle - low ph and kh, high gh and TDS

I'm sorry if you see me reply multiple times, my phone seems to make my replies disappear in my end. I have not used my r/o unit at all. I set my tank up with well water, and the wc I did during the nitrite spike was well water. I got the unit as a safety thing once I realized that tank...

Cycle - low ph and kh, high gh and TDS

I have set up a 20 gallon long planted tank, which ideally is going to be a shrimp and snail tank. I've cycled it with ammonia, and for the past week it has been consuming 2 ppm of ammonia in 24 hours. Last night I tested it and there was about .25 ppm left (maybe a little less). I thought...

    cycling tank with tss

This is a summary of events, since this thread is getting long I did a water change, and added 1 tsp baking soda to the new water going into the tank before trying TSS the second time (first time failed - low pH). Tested 12 hours after adding the baking soda and pH went from 6 to ~7.2...

    cycling tank with tss

I did indeed get the amquel plus, since it shouldn't affect pH. I did notice last night and today that Rakki is acting strange. Last night, I was pretty sure he was dying, and today he's a bit better but not really normal. He hasn't eaten last night or today. Last night after work, I...

    cycling tank with tss

I did a water change and siphoned, and Rakki is swimming around a lot more, exploring his rearranged tank. Think he's happier

    cycling tank with tss

That's an interesting link, thank you! I was reading about Amquel, do you know how long it detoxifies for, or is it the same as prime (up to 24 hours?). Oh, found it.

    cycling tank with tss

It's a mystery to me why this tank won't cycle. I've tried multiple times (fishless with fish food, then when I failed and tried later I used fishless with ammonia). Everything ended with only high ammonia and nothing else. Granted, looking back, it was probably my pH crashing, though that...
