    Betta Id ("king" Betta, Petco)

Hi folks! I'm looking for some ID help. Recently, I brought home a betta from Petco who had been labeled as a "king" betta. Normally I don't like buying fish from Petco, but considering his size I liked seeing him in that little cup even less. He's been in his 10 gallon for a couple of weeks...

Velvet In Community Tank With Scaleless Fish And Plants

Update: Hey folks, it's been a bit! For the last couple of weeks, I've had all the barbs in a dark quarantine and on Seachem Cupramine. The community tank, with the rainbow shark, pleco, kuhlis, danios, and snails was also dark, and only on Prazipro. At the end of this treatment, I'm sort of...

    Zebra Danio With Bent Spine

This does indeed sound to me like a genetic defect, they're common in danios (as you mentioned!). I'd just recommend looking into the symptoms of TB, to be SURE that it's not that. I don't mean to scare you, fish TB is pretty uncommon! But just to be safe

    Balancing Ph And Nitrates?

I know a lot of folks aren't keen on products to adjust pH, but I make regular use of Seachem Alkaline Buffer and Acid Buffer (you use both together), to keep my KH high and my pH stable. Haven't had any pH fluctuation since I started use.

    Filter Nightmare!

Did you clear out the impeller as well? It pops out of the motor, and gunk gets in there. Give that a try, to start. The motors on my 70s do generally feel slightly warm.

Velvet In Community Tank With Scaleless Fish And Plants

Medication update: the LFS I went to doesn't carry General Cure, as it turns out! But I was able to get Seachem Metroplex, which is mostly metrodanizole. I'll be treating the main tank with just Prazipro, and Gil's quarantine with both Prazipro and Metroplex. Hopefully it'll help his chances...

Between the reading of high nitrates and the drop+ammonia spike, did you do a water change? What's your partial water change schedule?

    Can Someone Identify This Fish?

I wonder if it's some sort of EJBD hybrid? I never see them with that particular patterning, it's very beautiful

Velvet In Community Tank With Scaleless Fish And Plants

Makes perfect sense, thank you so much. I'm going to pass on MG for now, but if in a couple weeks there's no improvement, I'll revisit. I'm going to treat the main tank with Prazipro, heat, and darkness. Depending on what I can afford when I get to my LFS, I may scoop up GC for Gil, or may just...

Velvet In Community Tank With Scaleless Fish And Plants

Should I remove my snails for a General Cure treatment? I've read about folks opting for just Prazi over GC, because the Prazi is already in liquid form and praziquantel takes a long time to dissolve in water. Do I need the metronidazole? Because if not, just liquid prazi will be more...

Velvet In Community Tank With Scaleless Fish And Plants

So in the picture above you can see the gill curl, the gold dusting, and the paleness up near his fin which looks to be a patch of lost scales--he's got it on the other side as well. He's had the gill deterioration for more than a month at this point, so he's an advanced case. I'm just hoping...

Velvet In Community Tank With Scaleless Fish And Plants

Thanks so much @clk89--no need to apologize for edits, I really appreciate the thoroughness. I'm raising the temp specifically "Increasing the water temperature to 82°F will speed the process". I saw other articles reflect this advice, with a heat+salt+darkness approach. The ammonia I read last...

Velvet In Community Tank With Scaleless Fish And Plants

That was my thinking, especially since pH consistency really matters more than the pH itself. All these fish are locally bought, and have probably always lived in super-rocky San Diego water.

@Rivermonster Sorry, but since you're my only responder so far, you get to be my sounding board. I've been doing some reading on medication. It sounds like metronidazole is an antibacterial--wouldn't I want something that targets parasites? Like praziquantel?
