Angelfishes and Butterflyfishes is book 3 in a series of books written by Scott Michael that covers reef fish. If you've read or have the 500 Marine Fish Species Handbook then you will be familiar with the author's work. However, whereas the handbook is basically just a quick reference type book, Angelfishes and Butterflyfishes is a detailed reference on most of the fish commonly available in the aquarium fish hobby for the included fish families.
The book starts off with an introduction to the profile style that will be used throughout the text. For each of the detailed profiles you will get information such as maximum length, aquarium size, water parameters, aquarium suitability, range, biology and captive care. The aquarium suitability is an number from 1 to 5 provided by the author that is used to help the hobbyist know quickly how the fish will do in the home aquarium. Level 1 means that the fish is almost impossible to keep in the home aquarium up to level 5 where the fish is considered hardy and will readily acclimate to the aquarium.
Angelfishes and Butterflyfishes is not just about those two families. Along with profiles on dwarf saltwater angelfish, large saltwater angelfish and saltwater butterflyfish, it also includes detailed profiles on ten more families as well.
This book covers about 300 plus pages of really good and detailed profile information on the fish in these families with lots of fantastic photographs throughout. If you have a fish only saltwater aquarium setup or a reef tank setup and you're interested in any of the fish families listed above then this would be a good investment. I give this book
