Dottybacks can usually found at your local saltwater fish store and the commonly sold dottybacks usually make good aquarium species. Dottybacks stay on the small side, often only get to be a few inches in size, and they are quite hardy. It's not recommended to mix them with conspecifics due to aggression issues. Make sure you have a hood or screen on your fish tank because they are good tank jumpers.
Provide plenty of hiding places and live rock goes a long way in making them feel secure. They will quickly find a cave to call their own and defend it against all encroachers. Buy farm raised or aquacultured species when you can.
Another commonly aquacultured species the black and white striped dottyback is mostly carnivorous and also plenty of hiding places.
