out of curiosity

hey everyone

ive read from many different places that zebra danio's are really good for cycling a tank. just a hypothetical question because im going to cycle mine using the fishfood way. how soon after adding a cycling speed up product could you add the danios's because in the video that is on the freshwater tank set up on this site the man adds the fish straight after adding the cycling agent.

thanks
andy

There are a very limited number of products that actually speed up the cycle. There's Tetra SafeStart, and I believe there's one that was developed in Europe. The others use enzymes or terrestrial nitrifying bacteria, neither of which will actually cycle a tank.
If using Tetra SafeStart, the fish can be added pretty much right away, I think.

The reason zebra danios are often suggested as tank cyclers is because they're hardy and can withstand some ammonia. However, this doesn't mean they're not uncomfortable or ill, which is why the folks around here suggest using TSS or some other fishless method of cycling.

I believe you have to add fish and TSS at the same time... because otherwise bacteria will die cause there is no production of ammonia..

and don't make the mistake i did - i added 2 danios in a 30 gallon tank. not enough ammonia produced, my tss died off, no cycled tank. get enough of them, and then no testing or water changes for a week. that is only when using tss
