| | Fish Helper | Correct Temperature I keep seeing danios discussed as tropical fish (including the "temperature" thread here), but the temperature on their profile and here says cooler.
Do they actually thrive in a warmer tank (76 F), or do they just make do?
Would they be better as companions for my goldfish rather than in the tropical tank?

| | Fish Helper | Hi Pete!
I've heard that zebra danios don't mind colder water, and I have had zebras in a tank without a heater, and they were just as happy as my zebras are now in my 20 gallon tropical tank.
I don't know if you should put your danios in with goldfish though, since danios are rambunctious little fish at times, they may be tempted to nip on your goldfish's fins. But maybe if you do a little more research you may prove me to be incorrect! It's just my opinion.
As I said, I've had zebras in a heated tank, and in a non-heated tank, and they were equally as happy! Good luck!

| | Fish Keeper | temperature aside i dont think they would get along well with the goldfish. mine are in my heated tank but i have heard that they do just fine unheated. just make sure you acclimatize them very slowly from the stores temp to yours |

| | Fish Helper | Hello Psychlist1972,
I have LF Danios in a 20 gal tank and I keep the temp at 76 deg F. They are just fine. I did have to medicate once and moved the temp to 80F. After that is when I noticed fry in the tank (ha!).

| | Moderator | Danios prefer cooler temps, from 65-75, both according to Fishlore's profile and according to the site you listed. This puts them in the low end of tropical or the high end of temperate. They wouldn't get along with fish that need a higher temp, nor would they do well with fish that need a much lower temp, but they likely could get along with most of the fish that we keep as pets. |

| | Fish Helper | Thanks all.
I'll keep them in the tropical tank, but bummer that they'll be sweating the whole time. Maybe I'll move them to a new (cooler) tank at some point.

| | Moderator | I see nothing in any of your tanks that would be unhappy at 73-75. That would keep the danios and the other tropicals happy. |

| | Fish Helper | Sounds good. I'll run the tank a degree or two lower than originally planned, and everyone will be good.

Pete | Maybe you could post some pictures of your tank! We really like pictures.... And good idea for putting the temperature a couple notches lower, the danios will be sweating less! |

The 55s are currently empty, waiting for me to move the danios etc. from the 10g. I'll post some pics once that tank is cycled and stocked.
In the mean time, here's a photo I took the other day. I was trying to snag a pic of the orange balloon molly to post in this thread. So I dropped a sinking tablet in there and started a feeding frenzy.
The big zebra danio was a rescue from my neighbor. She wanted to get rid of her tank (her husband passed away and the fish were his hobby) so she stopped feeding the zebra. There was enough algae in the tank, though, that the zebra lived in there solo literally for months without water changes, food, or anything else. He seems happy with some friends now, but boy was he hard to catch in that other tank!

| | Fish Helper | Thanks.
That danio is enormous, at least 2x the size of the next largest zebra. Plus, he has an odd hump on his back. You can imagine which danio is top of the pack

| | Fish Bum | That is a huge Danio. My danios are at 76 right now and they actually haven't been happier. |
