danio turning a shade of pink

My two zebra danio's have been a shade pink for a while and they look bloated (well, they've been bloated for a while now). They are active like regular danios and a bit aggressive to the new long finned danios (nipping off half of his tail).

Is it normal that my danio's are a shade of pink? and if not, what is wrong with them and how can i treat them?

Hi Again

I would give the same advice here as I did your other thread Are my serpae sick??

Danios are schooling fish and do better in groups, but with your stock, I wouldn't advise adding more.

It would really help to get your water checked. Since you don't have a kit you can take a sample to your fish store. Ask them to write down the readings for ammonia, nitrites and nitrates. Don't let them tell you "it's ok" get numbers.

Sometimes bloating can be cause by constipation. Try feeding him a few bits of thawed frozen shelled pea, about the size of his eye.

I don't think the pink is normal. How do his gills look?

If you could fill out your aquarium info, it will help others help you with out asking about your tank size and stock.
Here's how:

Hi and welcome to Fishlore.
Sorry your danios are having trouble. What are your Ammonia, nitrite, nitrate readings?? How often do you do waterchanges and how much??. How old is your tank and what other fish do you have in there??..Sorry for all the questions but the answers will allow members to better help you.
Updating your aquarium info in your user profile will allow members to help you too..

Edit: Thanks lucy . Didn't know about the other thread.

oh yeah i remember now they do free readings at Petco. Ill bring a sample tomorrow and check it out. Good call on the numbers.

should I take him out and feed him by himself or just drop it in the tank?

hes gills are pretty pink also. i was trying to take a picture but he doesn't keep still. haha

Thank you =) I don't own a test kit so i will probably go out tomorrow and buy one and on the way bring a sample to get read. I change the water every few weeks and i change 25% of the water every other week. Also the tank is almost a year old (our last tank was 14 years old). I have 2 long finned danios, 2 regular danios, 2 serpae tetras, and a comet gold fish.

yea I'm sorry about the missing info, still new with this so I wasn't to sure what to fill out of not. Thank you though. XD

Tough little buggers to photo, aren't they.
Pink gills.........I'd bet you have an ammonia readings.

You can drop the bits of pea in the tank.
The other fish might enjoy a few bits too. It won't hurt them.

You should probably go ahead and do a 50% water change tonight
to be on the safe side.
What water conditioner are you using? It would be a good idea to pick up some Prime or Stress Coat+ to detox the ammonia.

Do you know about the nitrogen cycle?
Here's a good link explaining it:
Nitrogen Cycle

Edit: This tank is a year old? Have these fish all been together for a year?

I was guessing the ammonia coming from the comet's waste.

Alright that sounds good. I should get to it then.
I have to admit, I've only recently become concerned with the fish for once because now I have to take care of them. The only instruction my uncle left me was to change half the water, keep the other half and scrub the algae and clean off the gravel. But my procedures have changed the more i get into taking care of them.

So, i don't use any conditioner so i probably have to go pick some of that up to. The only thing that i found that I have is ICH medicine and fungus medicine.

Oh my, yes the comet and the two reg danios are OLD!! the comet is about a year old but the danios, they are probably 3 or 4 now.

since you haven't been using a dechlorinator/water conditioner the chlorine/Chlorimines from your tap water is most likely to be causing this problem. chlorine/Chlorimines can cause the red blood cells to burst.
