I have had my zebra Danios since April, and noticed a while ago now, that one of them is much shorter and has smaller, rounder fins than the others. I have wondered for a while, but never got round to asking. Do you think he could be a crossbreed with something else, or that he just didn't develop properly when he was born?

Maybe he isnt a danio? If you buy fish as babies then occasionanally they might not be what the shop sold them as.. Look at pirahnas and those pacus. They get sold as red bellied pirahnas all the time. But there could easily be another explanation, i'm a bit of newbie to fish and theres a lot more experienced people who could give better advice. I know what you meen. I'm pretty sure he is a danio though. He has all the stripes and things like the other zevra danios I have, but his fins are just different.

Are the rest of your Danios really long-finned? There are short and long - finned danios.

No, I have seen long-finned ones at my lfs but mine are short-finned. This one Danio's fin is just much rounder and sticks up more - it's hard to describe. I've tried getting a picture, but the danios are just so fast the pictures ae too blury or they are not even in the picture at all. I'll try again, maybe when they are calmer, just after lights out.

calmer? Danios get calmer LOL. Mine are just blurs all the time maybe theres a fin difference in males and females. I don't know.... As long as its happy and healthy I wouldn't worry.

LOL, I know what you mean about getting calmer, but they do slow down (a little) after lights out.

I wasn't worying about him I was just wondering. He swims fine and isn't acting differently to the others. MAybe something happened to his fin at the store and it just didn't grow back proparly.

I looked at pictures in a book I have and there are 2 kinds of Zebra Danios and one has a rounded fin and the other more pointed* They call one the Long-Finned Variety (but I cannot tell the difference in the length of the fins in the two kinds) and the other the Wild Species.* The only difference I see is the dorsal fins and caudal fins on one are more rounded and the other more pointed.* Otherwise they are fairly identical. The Long-Finned Variety is the one with the pointed fins and the Wild Species has the rounded fins.

i have a similar problem with one of my danio's Its got feelers like a catfish

I thinks they are the females. Ihave 2 females and 6 males. Both females have the feelers things and none of the males.
