There's been a massacre!

Woah, holy jeez.

I came home after being away for two days to see less fish swimming around the normally active section of water in the middle and top of my tank. Not unusual, since they sometimes kiss the gravel for whatever reason, so I checked the bottom of the tank.

A carcass. One of my danios had been killed and then eaten, a lot. Huge chunks of body are missing, and it's, uhh, very dead. Doesn't have a head left. I thought this was pretty weird, but hey, I knew zebras could be aggressive - though I didn't expect that (especially since they've been happily living in a group of 8 for two months now). I even bought them an automatic feeder, so they wouldn't have to cannibalize eachother when I wasn't there to feed them.

I scooped out the body and started to count the rest of them, and found another dead in one of my cave decorations. This one hadn't been mauled, but it was equally as dead. I removed it as well.

The count starts over, and I count 5. There were 8 when I left. One half eaten carcass removed, one full carcass removed... and no sign of the 8th fish.

Still no sign of it, and I have looked in each of the decorations, in the plants, in the filter, in everything... and there's nothing to show. Is it likely the missing one was eaten entirely?

Just to be on the safe side, I checked water parameters and they're perfect... the same as they were when I left.

What a terrible thing to come home to. I'm really sorry you lost your fish.

It happened to me recently... any signs of stress in the remaining fish? do you have snails in the tank?

No snails, and none of the other fish have nipped fins or visible injuries. In the two days I've been home, they've all been acting normally again.
