Bossy females

I have a tank of 8 zebra danio in a 30 gallon tank. One of my females patrols the upper area of the tank and will chase and nip at any of the danios that try to go above the top half of the tank. I can see that she is carrying eggs, could that be why she is so bossy? My other females do the dame thing but none to the extent of the big one that is carrying eggs.

Hi juwanil,

I've had lots of experience with Zebra Danios. This is quite normal behaviour for your female, especially if you know she's carrying eggs. Danios can become quite terrtorial when "pregnant". If the danio is nipping to the extent that she isn't hurting any of the other fish, I wouldn't worry about it. But if she is, you might want to seperate her from the other fish for a while, maybe you can use one of those breeding traps, that you can easily find at your LFS. Good luck! And keep us posted!

I plan on adding some hatchetfish and maybe some angelfish to my tank and i am wondering if it would be a good idea with the zebras. They seem to be very playful and i dont want any unneccesary stress on the fish i add in. Would it be a good idea to return them when i get the other fish for store credit?
