Danios' dangerous game

Hello Everybody,

I have 7 Zerbra Danios, they have a very strange habit, they try to push each other into the gravel!! is this normal? first I thought they are playing or they're trying to mate or something but today I found one of them trapped in the gravel, only the end of his tail was out it took me some time to take him out without hurting him. so what do you think is there anything wrong with them? I think their game is getting a little dangerous.

By the way I'm new here and to fish keeping, had my 18 gallon tank with 7 danios and 2 goldfish for about a month now.

Hello Autumn and welcome to fishlore! Zebra Danio's have big personalities for such small fish. Its possible that it is a dominance thing going on. I have had them but never saw them try to push each other into the gravel. I agree its a bit dangerous if one gets stuck in the gravel, poor lil thing.

Hi autumn, Welcome to Fish Lore.

Try to give them plenty of hiding places, that might help. It's a good thing you were able to save the little guy.

Are your goldfish in the same tank? If so, they really shouldn't be, goldfish are huge waste producers 1 goldfish should have 20g's to itself and another 10g for each additional goldfish.

Good luck to you and your fish.

exactly Kate! I got the danios for tank cycling (I know I shouldn't have done that, newbie here). Back then I thought I don't like them and I would give them away when the tank is cycled but now that I see they're so playful, smart and fun to look at I'm not gonna let them go anywhere. they cycled the tank, they own the tank

Lucy thanks for your advice about the goldfish, they are very small now and not making a lot of waste (at least my ammonia reading still shows zero) when they get bigger I should do something about them but I have a real problem here, HOW DO YOU GET RID OF A FISH??
We had these two goldfish before I got the tank they had a desperate life in a very small bowl I put them in the tank just to see what happens, now they seem so happy and active that I can't even think about putting them back in the bowl.
I also had a betta in this tank but he killed one of my Danios! I couldn't take him back to the local store where they used to keep him in a small glass he could hardly turn around in it. so he is in a bowl now until I get him a small tank. but I can't get a new tank for every fish that I can't keep!

P.S. here is a photo of my betta, his name is Hashem Silhouette

Hi autumn
I've seen my danios in some strange places ( under wood , under the filter ) but never stuck in the gravel. It certainly sounds dangerous. Glad you saw it.
