Loaches and tank size?

Hey hey, since reading more and more about Yoyo Loaches iv'e decided that i would love to have about 4 of them for my tank ^^

ATM i have 1 angelfish, 3 mollies and 2 platys, I'm planning on getting a tank thats either 170 litres or 240 litres, I'm hoping to get 6 zebra danios, a german blue ram and possibly a kribensis (depending on whether i decide its worth the aggression risk...), I'm wondering if either of these tanks would be big enough (thinking of 121x41x50 for the 240 litre) as i'd hate to put these fish in a tank that isn't ideal for them!

Loaches are very active so the more room they have the better! Kribensis really aren't too aggresive as long as they don't pair up and try to claim territory. Yo-yo loaches would do well in either of those sizes, thought try to keep in mind that they really enjoy partial water changes. I've really enjoyed having these guys in my tank as they add a lot of activity. I have them with angelfish and mollies among others and they all get along (even a few semi-aggressives similiar to Kribs) Zebra danios might not like being with semi-agressive fish as from my experience they like it to be rather quiet, but experiment and decide for yourself! Good luck!

That's some of the best advice iv'e ever been given ^^
The partial water changes wont be a problem, I kind of like doing them Makes me feel a bit more involved
Thanks for the heads up on the danios, do you have any other recommendations for schooling fish I could put in that would be happy with that bunch? Sorry to bug ><

No worries! I love helping fellow fish keepers! Barbs and tetras have some good schoolers...I'm looking at adding schooling fish to my tank too so this is a great time for me to research! Rainbowfish school, but usually prefer fairly cool temperatures. Various pencilfish school if you're looking for something unusual. I'm thinking about trying Penguin Tetras, but I have to admit my favorite seems to be the Odessa barb (Puntius padamya). They add a ton of bright colors (males, females are a little plainer)

This link tells you a bit about schooling fish(may be entirely unhelpful to you) http://freshaquarium.about.com/cs/be.../schooling.htm

Some people claim platies are schooling fish, but in my epxerience livebearers don't make very good schooling fish. Hatchetfish and Silver Dollars are pretty neat, but Silver Dollars can be large and sensitive.Tetras would do very well if you can find a species you enjoy because most are hardy and will put up with semi-aggresive fish such as cichlids. Who knows? I've had fish who school that aren't supposed to and fish who were schoolers that often strayed far from each other. As a personal opinion, tetras look cool in schools and you can mix them with other schooling tetras to add a pretty color pattern!

I really like the idea of different types of tetras schooling together, it would look nice an varied!

I found the link really interesting I always love learning stuff about my fishy friends Iv'e noticed my Platies are less shy when i added more but i wouldn't say iv'e ever seen them school, or my Mollies.

Another member recommended Cherry barbs as a good schooling fish so i may go with those instead of the Danios, they said they are calmer schooling fish but would go well. Either way most people have advised not to have Danios so I'm gonna take that advice!

I love it when fish have different behaviours anyway, makes them much more individual ^^

Deffo gonna have a good think and look around my LFS about those Tetras, lemme know how it goes with you too

I agree about the zebra danios with the yoyo's. Zebras are very spaz fish. I have my 3 yoyo's with 5 cherry barbs and 7 cardinal tetras and it's an extremely peaceful tank. Nobody bothers anybody and it's a beautiful tank to watch.

Here's some information on Yoyo Loaches
http://www.loaches.com/species-index/botia-almorhae
I've kept them with several other types of loaches in a 55g aquarium and they were very active. Besides the loaches there were various types od danio for dither fish. Because danios are so spastic about swimming back and forth they make good ditherfish. dither fish let the rest of the tank know alls well in their little world and it'd ok to come out to play. When the dithers don't act right all the other fish will hide.
As long as they have plenty of hiding/sleeping places and dithers overhead they will be very entertaining.
