Hello & help!

Hello, firstly I would like to introduce myself to the Forum.

I have a 60 llitre, i think this is around 15 gallon?? I have:-
6 Platys - Scar, Jaffa, Spec, Spot, Tim & G
1 Balloon black molly - Blacky!
4 Glowlight tetras - eeni, meeni, miny, mo
1 Pleco - Sucker

All the above tanks mates have been living quite happily for just under a year & have produced quite a few babies but these little ones don't survive as they quickly get hunted down and you know what happens.

Off hand i do not know the water parameters as I am at work but i do use API testing kit and everything is ok. I do a 50% water every other week and sometimes every week. I wash the filter sponge in the emptied tank water every 4 - 6 weeks. The fish get fed flakes and also algea tablets once every 3 days.

I need some help as I have a sick Platy at the moment (Spot). I have been reading lots of different things and it sounds like she could have fish TB. She's lost alot of weight and has got a curved spine. I'm realizing today that I have to get her out of the tank asap but I don't have a hospital tank but i am going to whizz out when I finish work and buy one. My question is though do i have to get this tank up and running (do the cycle) before I put Spot in it? If I do that means leaving her in the main tank for longer which is going to make my whole tank sick.

I look forward to receiving any help & guidance.
Thankyou

Yes, it would have to be cycled or she will have to deal with the effects of a nitrogen cycle as well as her being sick. If she has been in for a while with the rest, there's a chance they may have it already...

I have a plastic tub that has no holes in that I can float in the main tank. I put the sick fish in there, and completely remove about 80% water twice every day and refill from the main tank. This keeps them clean and isolated from the tank without having a new tank to worry about (although I only do it with very sickly fish that are going to die as it also stops ammonia from a dead fish leaching into the tank).

I would recommend a hospital tank and all you would have to do is keep a spare filter (even a simple sponge filter) running in your usual tank until a quarantine is needed and then you will have an instant cycle when you need to quarantine!

welcome to fishlore!!!
im sorry your spot isnt feeling well
just cut off some of the filter media and use a decoration from your current tank, and put it in the QT tank that you get for spot.put it all in the tank and keep a close eye on the cycle...
goodluck!

Hi guys, thankyou both for your quick replies.

Tigerfishy - seems a good idea about having a seperate plaastic tub. i have a feeling that the others may have it. not that they're showing any signs but the sick platy has been in there for over a week which is whenI noticed her looking abit strange with curved spine & then the weight loss.

Shawnie -when you say to cut off some filter media, do you mean to just put it in the QT tank and let it float around in the water or use it in the filter? Sorry if i'm sounding a bit dumb!

Thanks again.

Hey if there's a dumb question, I've asked it. Do not worry about how silly you think the question is. You're here to learn, how else ar eyou going to learn other than by asking?
Good luck

Also WELCOME!!!!!!! In my infinite rudeness, I noticed I forgot this first time round...

Welcome to fishlore! I hope your fish will be okay and I really like that plastic tube idea, I think that would be a great way to put your sick fish in until you get a QT tank and cycle it. Good luck!
